Review - Close Combat : Invasion Normandy // PC /// Eurogamer
Above all, the close nature of the terrain brings good combined arms tactics to the fore; the days when you could send tanks off on their own across the Russian plains in Close Combat III are long gone.
Close Combat III offered a points system that allowed the successful player to put together a force of his choosing with few practical restrictions.
This game lives or dies on its gameplay though, and you don't even notice the odd indication that this is still a 2D game as the attention to detail is breathtaking.

 Close Combat 2
In September 1944, with the Germans reeling and the Allies closing on the Reich’s borders, Montgomery planned to attack with the British XXX Corps on a narrow front across the canal-and-river laced Dutch countryside, with the ultimate objective of seizing a bridge across the Rhine at Arnhem.
Partially this is due to the campaign itself—many of the scenarios are fought at close range in small towns, and often the objective for the Allies is to capture a bridge before the Germans blow it.
Close Combat 2 has a lot to offer to a wide range of gamers; one can only hope that serious wargamers will not be put off by the game’s real-time engine and that Total Annihilation fans will not shrink from the game’s historical aspects, because this game successfully capitalizes upon the strengths of both.

The game includes a nice tutorial (the same as in the demo of the game); this shows some basic tactics and how to move your troops.
In game terms, it means that your men are human, they have human reactions to situations, and each and every soldier is accounted for and modelled separately.
Close Combat is a very enjoyable game, moreso with the 1.0a patch applied (which for one thing speeds up scrolling appreciably).

In Close Combat IV, you’ll be able to make strategic decisions—like the allocation of reserves and air and artillery assets—that will affect your tactical games, and the losses you inflict and suffer in gameplay will have some bearing on the strategic picture.
Close Combat IV should be out by the end of this month, and we’ll be interested to see if the SSI can pull off the integration of the strategic and tactical aspects of the game.

The Close Combat series takes the opportunity to use this concept and tie in the history by incorporating Marines into their series, while at the same time improving and changing their style of gameplay to create an all new experience.
I hope this game proves that gamers, for the most part, prefer a completely finished game delayed until after the scheduled release date over an on-time game that feels as if it should still be in beta testing.
Close Combat: first to Fight is what it is, a decent but not great twist on the standard first person shooter.

Close Combat is a series of squad-level World War II tactical combat games that simulate the behavior of individual men and vehicles.
At heart, the fourth Close Combat is very similar to more traditional real-time strategy games: You assign your units various orders such as move, fast move, sneak, lay smoke, ambush, defend, and fire by right-clicking the mouse, and you give your units a target or destination by left-clicking.
Where Close Combat II was cool in that it allowed you to customize what units showed up for each battle, Close Combat IV blows it away with bigger maps, smarter AI, artillery and air support, and the ability to move your units around a game-board of sorts.
