Close to the Edge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Close to the Edge is the fifth album by British progressive rock band Yes.
Close to the Edge set a trend for Yes of including a single epic song significantly longer than the others which was followed in the later albums Relayer (which featured "The Gates of Delirium") and Going for the One (1977) (which featured "Awaken").
Many consider Close to the Edge to be not only the greatest album in Yes' discography, but the best album of the progressive and art rock genres.

Close To The Edge has gained its place in progressive rock history but I am still on the outside of that party not knowing what the hell is going on.
Close to the Edge alone could have made this a 5 star album, but then throw in And you and I, with the melodic, emotional steel guitar work of Howe and Squire's technical masterpiece in Siberian K., this album is something everyone should try.
Close To The Edge is no exception when it comes to the consistency of excellence that the label demands of itself.

I think for the majority of their fans (especially from the 70's) 'Close to the Edge' remains the high water mark of Yes' catalog.
Each song is a thing of beauty and, with close listening, can transport the listener to other dimensions (or were the 70's simply good to me?) But, seriously, I love this recording as much today as I did when I first became addicted to it 30 years ago.

With 1971's "Fragile" having left Yes poised quivering on the brink of what friend and foe acknowledged was the peak of the band's achievement, "Close to the Edge" was never going to be an easy album to make.
"Close to the Edge" comprised just three tracks, the epic "And You And I" and "Siberian Khatru," plus a side-long title track that represented the musical, lyrical, and sonic culmination of all that Yes had worked toward over the past five years.
"Close to the Edge" would make the Top Five on both sides of the Atlantic, dispatch Yes on the longest tour of its career so far and, if hindsight be the guide, launch the band on a downward swing that only disintegration, rebuilding, and a savage change of direction would cure.

"Close To The Edge" is broken into various sections.
Constructed, as Ed Macan points out in his in-depth analysis of the piece in his book Rocking the Classics, in a form very similar to the classical sonata-allegro form, "Close to the Edge" is a masterpiece of composition and can be seen as the pinnacle of the band's achievement.
