this gives the proper impression of how old and antiquated london's underground really is. it is simultaneously a world class tourist destination and a third world transportation system.
This district of north London was recorded as Cockfosters in 1524 and although the origin of the name is uncertain, it is possible that is derived from either the personal name of a family that once lived here, or a house recorded in 1613 on the edge of Enfield Chase called Cockfosters.

Lord's and Marlborough Road Closed on 19 Nov 1939, with Swiss Cottage closing on 17 Aug 1940.
The station was relocated in March 1941 to improve the interchange with the tube lines (at that time the Northern and Piccadilly).
Look on the right as you're leaving the station (or left if you're travelling towards Tower Hill) and you should be able to see the stairs leading up from the Eastbound platform.

The service between Amersham and Aylesbury was officially withdrawn from London Underground operation (and therefore no longer part of the challenge) on the 10th September 1961, making it 4 less stations that you had to do.
They were mainly doing it just for charity (North London Hospice) and were being sponsored on a 'per station' basis, so that even if they didn't do all 275, they'd still make a lot of money.
In 1961 there were 268 stations on the tube map.

In 1998, London Transport announced that it was seeking private funds to realise plans that had been discussed for some years to extend the line into south London, sharing track and stations with the main line network (as already happens on parts of the Bakerloo Line, District Line and Metropolitan Line).
The opening of the Docklands Light Railway provided a new connection for the East London Line at Shadwell (although the tube and DLR stations are 50 m apart and the interchange is via the street), and in 1999 a new station, Canada Water, was opened to connect with the Jubilee Line Extension.
As a part of phase 2 of the extension project, a 2.5 km link is planned to connect the line south of Surrey Quays to the overground Network Rail South London Line to Clapham Junction, by way of Queens Road Peckham, Peckham Rye, Denmark Hill, Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road.

Disused Stations on the London Underground - they're there, but we don't see them.
I've been fascinated with abandoned underground stations for a while now, and have found two great books on the subject: Abandoned Stations On London's Underground and London's Disused Underground Stations.
For great information on the Underground's history at a glance, you can't do much better than London Underground Diagrammatic History, a fold-out map (diagram, really) showing the history of each station in a compact form.

The actual Eurostar trains are going into the old station, but a 200m+ extension is being built, as well as a new London Underground ticket hall and a massive clean up of the old station (visable in my CTRL threads).
London St Pancras on the otherhand has been around for 148 years (when CTRL is fully complete in 2007, St Pancras will be celebrating its 150th anniversary!), serving commuter, suburban, metro and national rail.
London will stand up to whoever thinks they might take a pot shot at it and they have picked on the wrong city to start a fight with because they will lose.
