Topic: Closed ball

  PlanetMath: ball
with the taxicab metric, the ball with radius
Balls are open sets under the topology induced by the metric, and therefore are examples of neighborhoods.
A ball is sometimes referred to as a disc, although disc is usually reserved for a ball in a metric space having the structure of a two-dimensional vector space.

Valve closing method and apparatus for use with an oil well valve - United States Patent 4,144,937
The closing apparatus of the ball valves in these patents are arranged such that the return spring force and the pressure of the compressed gas is at its lowest point during the last increment of travel of the ball operating mechanism rotating the ball to the fully closed position.
A ball closing piston is disclosed wherein one side is exposed to the pressure in the drill stem below the ball valve, and a second side is exposed to pressure which exists in the tester valve apparatus having a lower value due to the mentioned throttling effect.
As the ball valve is moved further toward the closed position, the orifice between the ball valve seat and the ball valve is made smaller and smaller thus increasing any pressure drop due to the fluid flowing between the ball valve and the ball valve seat.

Electrodynamic Explanation of Ball Lightning   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Ball lightning is considered as self-closed alternating displacement current, which produces air luminescence (electroluminescence).
Ball lightning is the visible proof of the fact that displacement currents exist in nature along with conduction currents.
Ball lightning has energy and is a rather stable field form of matter.

 Ball Valve Controllers
Ball valves are the most commonly used kind of valve for controlling propellant flow and feed pressure to the propellant tanks.
Between the ports is a channel containing a sphere (the "ball") with a hole through its center and suspended by seating material that holds the ball in place and seals the volume outside the ball from fluid flow around it.
The diameter of the ball channel is the specified diameter of the ball valve.

Question and Answer with FINDaLESSON.com Golf Professionals
A closed clubface is the primary cause of a hook and I find this is often the result of the player's effort to keep it square, or facing the target, during the back swing.
The ball flight you describe is the result of the club face at impact being severely closed relative the the club path.
The reason your ball barely gets airborne, is because your clubface position at impact is extremely closed which is not allowing the effective loft of the club to work at all.

Closure of an open ball and separable space?
for example although the closure of the open ball of radius one about p is not the closed ball of radius one, it is the closed ball of radius 1/2.
Because the closed ball of radius 2 includes 2, and the closure of this open ball does not, this closure is not the closed ball of radius 2.
The original post had 'not a closed ball' rather than 'not a closed ball of the same radius', and I thought you were referring to that with the comment about closed balls of a different radius.

Mystery Tank Responses   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Only thing is this one stuck in the closed position (it happens!) and the new driver didn't relieve the pressure by opening the drain on the spill containment manway (unless this was a drain-less version).
Tank ullage spaces were connected via the vapor manifold but since the 87 grade ball float on the dual point vapor riser was also closed, vapors returning to the 87 grade tank could not enter this crossover manifold and pass to the 89 or 92 grade tanks other than through the.062 diameter bleed hole.
The dual point riser ball float is oriented as such that it does act as a check valve for vapors passing from the 87 tank to the 89 and 92 tanks or the vent stacks.

Ball Valves - Floating Ball Valves
Ball valves are straight-through flow valves which provide positive shutoff with minimal pressure drop and flow turbulence.
The barrier to flow is a ball which is rotated 90 degrees to the direction of flow.
In floating ball valves, the ball has some freedom to move along the axis of the valve while having no freedom to rotate against the stem.

Open and Closed Sets in Metric Spaces
To construct this set, start with the closed interval [0,1] and recursively remove the open middle-third of each of the remaining closed intervals...
This finite union of closed intervals is closed.
The Cantor set is the intersection of this (decreasing or nested) sequence of sets and so is also closed.
