  PlanetMath: closed form
This is in contrast to the recurrence relation form, which can have all of the previous values of the sequence as parameters.
The benefit of the closed form is that one does not have to calculate all of the previous values of the sequence to get the next value.
This is version 3 of closed form, born on 2001-11-04, modified 2002-03-08.

Closed-form solution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The classic example involves the two roots of a quadratic equation, which can be expressed in closed form in terms of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and square root extraction.
When no closed-form solutions exist – as is the case for fifth-order or higher polynomial equations, for example – such equations have to be solved numerically, typically by using some root-finding algorithm.
For example, many cumulative distribution functions cannot be expressed in closed form, unless one considers special functions such as the error function or gamma function to be well-known.

Closed Form Solution for the Wave Equation
This paper documents both the development of a closed form solution for the one-dimensional wave equation as it is applied to piles and its comparison to numerical solutions of the same problem.
The comparison shows variations between the closed form solution and the numerical methods that, although not egregious, are also not consistent from case to case.
Closed form solutions were either abandoned entirely or applied on a limited basis or in an ancillary way to other techniques.

The rationale for the use of closed form solutions as opposed to the numerical ones is set forth.

Macroapproach Closed-Form Series Solution for Orthotropic Plates   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Using known solution forms of summation equations, solution of systems of equations in open form has been avoided.
Numerical examples involving orthotropic plates with various aspect ratios, loading cases, and bridge-type boundary conditions are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the approach for predicting deflections and moments.
The major advantage of this technique is the development of a solution algorithm in the form of summation equations, leading to fast converging closed-form series solutions.

 Numerical Solution, Closed-Form Solution
Models take many forms, but they generally comprise a set of assumptions that are formalized with mathematical equations.
A closed-form solution (or closed form expression) is any formula that can be evaluated in a finite number of standard operations.
Closed form solutions and numerical solutions are similar in that they both can be evaluated with a finite number of standard operations.

Many economic and econometric applications require the integration of functions lacking a closed form antiderivative, which is therefore a task that can only be solved by numerical methods.
We propose a new family of probability densities that can be used as substitutes and have the property of closed form integrability.
This is especially advantageous in cases where either the complexity of a problem makes numerical function evaluations very costly, or fast information extraction is required for timevarying environments.

Abstract: In this paper we present the theoretical setting for the closed form solutions to the multiview constraints of curves and surfaces observed by the motion of a camera in a scene.
We nd that knowledge of a curve or surface`s structure can provide matching constraints and thus closed form solutions for the position of a camera in a scene over many images.
This is advantageous for the process of Structure From Motion (SFM) as it may negate some of the need for non-linear optimisation...

This paper summarizes the recent development and use of reference points for fisheries management and their current contribution to precautionary fisheries management.
Reference points are only relevant in the management context if they are incorporated into harvest control laws which form the basis for management action.
They need to be reconciled through discussion and negotiation among managers, fishers and the fishing industry, since the risk that a particular fishing strategy will be precautionary depends on the overall performance of the fishery as a system and not just on the precision of the reference point.
