Joy Division in 1980 was a band at the top of its game, so driven by creativity and new ideas that they released back to back classic albums in the span of less than a year.
Joy Division is a record store geek's dream come true, and anybody with too much time on their hands who really knows their shit about music will have heard this.
Joy Division combined the desolate electronics and mechanics of the beginning of 80's new wave and industrial music with the minimalism and deep emotional scars and desperation of late period punk.

Joy Division was at the height of their powers on Closer, equaling and arguably bettering the astonishing Unknown Pleasures, that's how accomplished the four members were.
Joy Division were finally buried, it contained a few jokes and the newly-confident foursome were beginning to embrace dance.
Given that 'Closer' is a move away from the guitar based 'Unknown Pleasures' to a sound sometimes ignoring guitars completely (eg, 'isolation'), chances are Joy Division themselves would indeed have done something 'different' through subsequent releases had they only all stayed alive in order to record and write subsequent releases.

Joy Division were certainly an alienating bandintendedly so they never introduced their songs live, they never did encores, they were solemn on stage and immobile, they strangely but deliberately created a distance between themselves and their audience.
Joy Division were one of the few bands around still capable of actually changing the face of music, and probably the most likely to do so.
Joy Division's appeal has, however, far outlasted their tragically short life because, if they were miserable, they did miserable differently.

For Joy Division, it seemed like a good chance to finally capture some success but for singer Ian Curtis, he was growing weaker and more depressed as his marriage began to disintegrate along with the relationship he was having with a girl from Belgium.
While Joy Division’s music can be heard in some of the stuff that New Order has done, their influence can be easily traced to bands like Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, the Smashing Pumpkins, and most recently, new groups like Interpol and the Division of Laura Lee.
While it was their last album, “Closer” was definitely one hell of an album that fond a farewell to its listeners.

Joy Divison impressed everybody and according to Mick Middlehurst [The Face, 1980]: "The intensity, the passion of this music completely eclipsed anything the audience had seen in a long, long time." This event was FAC 3 035.
Joy Division had played two concerts in one day several times before so they figured they could do it again, but Ian who had been increasingly ill the last couple of months was in no condition for one more performance.

When Joy Division made a single they treated it as a fresh artefact, rather than pull a track from their albums, which was unforgivable laziness in their eyes.
Joys Divisions Substance became the home for the bands long out of print singles which demonstrated that the band could bring the same energy to the more focused "7 or "12 released that they did on an album.
It is the album that got me interested in the band, so I would recommend it to anyone for their first purchase.

Joy Division didn’t really fit the punk scene of the late 70s; although they played with the Clash and Sex Pistols, they didn’t have that energy that made you want to slam dance with your buddies.
Closer was, and still is, a very dark, yet mellow album.
Almost too expressive, the heart of the album was the inability to find meaning in things and happiness in life.

Joy Division started in 1977, as Warsaw, and quickly improved its sound (with the help of producer Martin Hannet from Factory Records) to its impressive debut album "Unknown Pleasures" (1979).
Closer is one of those albums I feel is best listened to in the context of the entire album.

The band's reverberating mesh of minor-key lines and Curtis's bass voice are gloomy enough on their own, and attention to the words reveals references to fler-than-fl stories by JG Ballard and Joseph Conrad; the void and its terrors were splitting Curtis apart from the inside.
This is an extraordinary, exceptional album that's simultaneously depressing due to its circumstance and uplifting due to its beauty.

Though listed as Joy Division, it was actually a track from the Warsaw days recorded live on October 2, 1977 The song, recorded live, was preceded by Curtis screaming "You all forgot Rudolf Hess" which momentarily stuns the audience into silence.

The 11 songs from these sessions were supposed to have been Joy Division's first album, but the deal fell through.
Joy Division teamed up with Martin Hannett again for the recording of their follow-up to the highly acclaimed debut album.
It is also a bit unlikely that Joy Division would have decided to record yet more songs so soon after the "Closer" sessions, keeping in mind Ian's fragile health at this time, with several concerts having to be cancelled.

Hannett was still producing, but seems to have taken as many chances as the band itself throughout — differing mixes, differing atmospheres, new twists and turns define the entirety of Closer, songs suddenly returned in chopped-up, crumpled form, ending on hiss and random notes.
Keyboards also took the fore more so than ever — the drowned pianos underpinning Curtis' shadowy moan on "The Eternal," the squirrelly lead synth on the energetic but scared-out-of-its-wits "Isolation,"; and above all else "Decades," the album ender of album enders.
