This is a play by a man who has drunk desire down to the last bitter dregs, who knows that love can hurt and scar as much as it consoles and heals.
Closer seems to probe deeper than individual character; it charts some of the most ambiguous areas of emotional dependence and independence, and of the human need both to be known and to be unknowable, areas where very different people can find themselves alarmingly alike.
Closer has only four characters but is infinitely more striking, a sort of Private Lives for the late 1990s, with brutal language to match and an ingenious narrative scheme which duplicates the relationships into the musical form of a quadrille.

Closer (play) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Closer is the second play written by Patrick Marber.
I hoped the dramatic power of the play would rest on that tension between elegant structure – the underlying plan is that you see the first and last meeting of every couple in the play – and inelegant emotion.
The play was made into a 2004 film of the same name, also written by Marber and directed by Mike Nichols.

 Closer
What made Closer inherently cinematic, according to Nichols, was the fact that “it’s told in the way that people remember things — in a telescoped way.” Also, he adds, the element of intimacy in Marber’s work lends itself better to the screen than the stage.
Overall, Roberts says she admires Closer because, “I think it’s about the plight of these people trying to be closer to each other, to be closer to something really valued in life, to be closer to a truth that maybe none of them will ever be.
What drew him to Closer, which he had seen several times on stage and greatly admired, was Marber’s “extraordinary dialogue and its concentrated focus on these four characters who are the heart of the play,” he says.

 Closer - hello-stranger.net, a closer [archive] fansite
About half-way through "Closer," a chatty, claustrophobic film about sex, romance and betrayal, there are two scenes that rip though the genteel, polished skin of the thing and feel possessed of the organic pulse of human life.
So while the sexual politics of "Closer" are played dirtier than any previously portrayed on the megaplex screens, they are still likely to shock audiences who do not expect, or want, to see the facts of life discussed publicly.
Closer provides such an up-close and ultra-personal look at relationships and their unraveling that it sometimes blinds us to the simple beauty of romance.

 Closer - Patrick Marber
As in his earlier play, Dealer's Choice, Marber is sharply observant in mapping the clashes that arise as his compulsively faithless characters dive eagerly toward their next betrayal.
Closer follows their relationships over an extended period, leaping ahead months and even years in almost each of the twelve scenes to the next decisive meeting or confrontation.
Alice knew where to find happiness, but Dan couldn't play along; he and the others remain unable to commit themselves to (or be satisfied with) what they have.

The play follows four Londoners prone to selfishness, foul-mouthed sex talk, and sudden cruelties, through a series of couplings and betrayals.
Critics praised the play as an anatomy of modern love, reaching hysterical heights of enthusiasm for a one-joke internet sex scene between Dan and Larry early in the play.
But Closer confines itself to too narrow a range of lives to be any sort of anatomy.

Now he restricts his focus to two couples who play musical beds in a cruel combination of lust and ego, the machinations delivered through stunning performances by Jude Law and Clive Owen as the men and Natalie Portman and Julia Roberts as the women.
This accurately reflects the cold cores of these contemporary characters but also results in a distancing of the viewing audience, not necessarily a bad consequence since reflection on this behavior is heartily recommended.

If Closer does just manage to keep one speculating on what's going to happen to its characters next, it's the sort of grim interest in evidence at the scene of a tragic accident, with the bystanders waiting for a glimpse of mangled bodies being carried away on stretchers.
As plodding as most of the evening is, Closer does manage to pick up a little speed and generate some interest late in Act Two, when Alice, comparatively the most understandable of the group, manages to spring a few surprises and generates the only warmth and genuine feeling of the evening.
Closer strikes one as its theatrical sequel, 30 years on, older but no wiser, with a curious end of the century spin that sexual and emotional freedom now apparently includes the right to extract revenge, pain, and suffering from any partner who cannot or will not completely fulfill ones needs and banish the loneliness.
