I did find with my novel 'Closing Time' which is a more serious approach to very much the same subjects that all my novels are, that in European countries they recognise the conditions discussed as being identical to their own, particularly in Britain and in Germany.
At the same time very much smaller than we ever imagined it to be in terms of viruses and the quarks and the fragments of an atom.
I didn't spend a lot of time in it, I think it was a period of two and a half years of interrupted therapy, and I suppose I did benefit but not to the extent that he thought I would when I went into it.

That said, Closing Time remains a brilliant book--broadly, about the end of culture, the end of the U.S. as a wonderful place for ordinary working stiffs, and death itself.
While Catch 22 was of little practical usage for life of all of us, Closing time digs deeply to the fuzzy beginnings of the causes using the author's 22 like paradox tool which could be sorted as dialectic, unmodern and difficult to accept by too serious readers.
Catch 22 uses the scope of small army unit, Closing time is enlarged to that of U.S. society.

It starts with a sunrise, it ends with "one star shining", and in between Closing Time contains an honest year's worth (1973, to be exact) of sweet, melodic, vintage Tom Waits--minus some of the vocal growl and thematic grit of his later stuff (but you can see it coming).
Closing Time is not as dark or quirky as some of the later Tom Waits albums and is an excellent introduction if you are unfamiliar with his music.
CLOSING TIME is filled with classics that transport you to perhaps a different time, and a place where you are surrounded by ragamuffins dwelling on wrong turns that they made in life that have led them to where they are now.

The Waits of CLOSING TIME was a barroom balladeer too, but one who fit neatly into the early-'70s folk-rock, singer-songwriter paradigm (CLOSING TIME's opener "Ol' '55", in fact, was covered by the Eagles on their first album).
Listeners looking for the eccentric, carnivalesque atmosphere that typifies Waits's work from the'80s and '90s will be surprised by the relative straightforwardness of CLOSING TIME, yet the album announces an important talent.
Whilst Waits has stood the test of time and experimentation this is something which has stayed with him throughout his career and can be seen as much on his most recent offering, 'Real Gone' as it can be on this.

But he also has a gift for gently rolling pop melodies, and he can come up with striking, original scenarios, as on the best songs, "Ol' 55" and "Martha," which Yester discreetly augments with strings.
