Closing Time (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Closing Time is the debut album of Tom Waits, released in 1973 (see 1973 in music) on Asylum Records.
A half-hearted cover version of "Ol' '55" was later a hit for The Eagles, who recorded it for their 1974 album On the Border.
The song "Midnight Lullaby" borrows its opening line from the English nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Sixpence", for those of you who were unaware.

Once upon a time it was a great late night drinking album, one my friends and I would listen to on cassette while driving from DC to Baltimore and back on a Saturday night.
Perhaps his most easily accessible album, Closing Time is a tour-de-force for anyone who's had their heart broken and lived the ensuing days (months, years.
The second half of the album is almost all slow sad songs that are almost primarily piano.

Closing Time - Tom Waits - Song Listings
Tom Waits' debut album is a minor-key masterpiece filled with songs of late-night loneliness.
Within the apparently narrow range of the cocktail bar pianistics and muttered vocals, Waits and producer Jerry Yester manage a surprisingly broad collection of styles, from the jazzy "Virginia Avenue"...
But he also has a gift for gently rolling pop melodies, and he can come up with striking, original scenarios, as on the best songs, "Ol' 55" and "Martha," which Yester discreetly augments with strings.

Waits' entire musical approach is stylized, of course, and at times derivative -- "Lonely" borrows a little too much from Randy Newman's "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" -- and his lovelorn lyrics can be sentimental without being penetrating.
Closing Time announces the arrival of a talented songwriter whose self-conscious melancholy can be surprisingly moving.

ol' '55 lyric, Tom Waits song, album Closing Time
Ol' 55 Well my time went so quickly, I went lickety-splickly out to my old '55 As I drove away slowly, feeling so holy, God knows, I was feeling alive.
And now the sun's coming up, I'm riding with Lady Luck, freeway cars and trucks, Stars beginning to fade, and I lead the parade Just a-wishing I'd stayed a little longer, Oh, Lord, let me tell you that the feeling's getting stronger.
And my time went so quickly, I went lickety-splickly out to my old '55 As I pulled away slowly, feeling so holy, God knows, I was feeling alive.
