  Clothing Terminology
Clothing terminology comprises the names of individual garments and classes of garments, as well as the specialized vocabularies of the trades that have designed, manufactured, marketed and sold clothing over hundreds of years.
Clothing terminology ranges from the arcane (watchet, a pale blue color name from the sixteenth century) to the everyday (t-shirt), and changes over time in response to fashion which in turn reflects social, artistic, and political trends.
Gown (from medieval Latin gunna) was a basic clothing term for hundreds of years, referring to a garment that hangs from the shoulders.

In its broadest sense, clothing is defined as coverings for the torso and limbs as well as coverings for hands (gloves), feet (shoes, sandals, boots), and head (hats, caps).
But most clothing consists of cloth, and most cloth can be laundered and mended (patching, darning) (but compare felt).
Charities usually skim the best of the clothing to sell in their own thrift stores, then sell the rest to merchants who bale it up and ship it to poor Third-World countries, where vendors bid for the bales and then make what profit they can selling used clothing.

 Encyclopedia: Victorian fashion
Women's fashionable clothing started with a straight, Regency silhouette, bloomed into exaggerated skirts and sleeves, moved to small shoulders and even wider skirts supported by crinolines and hoops, and narrowed by way of the bustle to hobble skirts.
Men's fashionable clothing was perhaps the least volatile, but there was still an enormous difference between the wasp waist and frock coats of the 1830s dandy and the sober sack suits and Norfolk jackets of 1901.
Men's formal clothing may have been less colorful than it was in the previous century, but brilliant waistcoats and cummerbunds provided a touch of color, and smoking jackets and dressing gowns were often of rich Oriental brocades.

Review: Dressing Renaissance Florence: Families, Fortunes, and Fine Clothing
Building on the work of Jacqueline Herald, she provides a comprehensive glossary of fashion terminology that is the most extensive to date and will be of enormous value to historians of costume.
Through detailed analysis of family account books, she quantifies precisely how much of a patrician family’s income was devoted to clothing (a staggering 40 per cent, it turns out); but by tracking expenditure over time she also demonstrates that families were parsimonious in years in which no major event such as a wedding occurred.
For this reason the clothes depicted in the frescoes served specific functions and on examination were often at odds with the known reality as described in family record books.

Asked whether the project is part of a plan to design a national costume, she said that the project solely seeks to safeguard the original terminologies used by different Iranian ethnic groups in this field.

Review: Author's response: Dressing Renaissance Florence: Families, Fortunes, and Fine Clothing
It seems to me that the excessive amount of legislation (the majority of which, in the late fifteenth century, targeted women’s clothing), is vivid testimony to a flurry of rapidly-changing modes of dress in this particular city.
Among other textile innovations, Florentine artisans developed luxury silk velvet cloth in a number of intricately woven and cut styles that were in demand all over the civilised world.
While late-medieval Sienese 'fops' and northern ducal courts were recorded for posterity in paintings and frescoes clothed in parti-coloured hose and pleated and ornamented robes, mature males from the elite ranks in Renaissance Florence scrupulously avoided all visual record of excess in their public dress.
