 SDNHM - Cloudless Sulphur, Phoebis sennae
The male Cloudless Sulphur is a lovely, solid-yellow butterfly with a wingspan of about 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 inches.
The Cloudless Sulphur ranges throughout Southern California and the Southwest, east through the southern United States and south into Baja California and northern Mexico.
Like most sulphurs, this butterfly rarely perches with open wings.

The upper surface of the wings of the male is a clear plain sulphur with merely the narrowest possible fringe of brown around the margin made only by the colored marginal scales.
The Red barred Sulphur is another splendid butterfly, somewhat Iarger than the Brimstone, which is easily distinguished by the broad reddish bar across the upper surface of the front wings.
Were one able to take a Clouded Sulphur butterfly and change the yellow to a deep orange color he could easily make a specimen that would pass for the present species.

Cloudless Sulphurs and their kin are believed to be the insects for which the name "butterfly" was chosen.
Their larval food sources are in the Fabaceae family, in particular, Partridge Pea (Cassia fasciculata) which is a weed commonly found on roadsides or disturbed sites in our area.
The summer of 1998 seems to have been a very good season for Cloudless Sulphurs.

This is the only Cloudless Sulphur I have ever seen at Fermilab, a new species for the site.
It is a southern butterfly, which, like the much smaller Dainty Sulphur, occasionally disperses north but does not survive our winters.
Cloudless Sulphur may be distinguished from the common Clouded and Orange Sulphurs in being larger and lacking the fl border on the outer margin of the wings.

Flight Period: The Cloudless Sulfur is multiple brooded, adults flying from February to December.
Extensively planted as an ornamental in earlier years, its invasive characteristics eventually made it unpopular with local homeowners.
The Cloudless Sulfur today seems to be seen most frequently along the coastal areas (judging from the capture locations of specimens seen in student collections at Newport Harbor High School).

Torrey Berger saw 3 Orange Sulphurs at Creve Coeur Lake on 11/12, 1 Orange Sulphur at Horseshoe Lake on 11/13, 1 Orange Sulphur nectaring on dandelion at Carlyle Lake on 11/16, and 11 Orange Sulphurs on 11/20 at Horseshoe Lake.
Orange Sulphur, Clouded Sulphur, Painted Lady, Buckeye and Common Checkered-Skipper were flying at the Katy Trail on 11/20 (J Moe).

This seems to be another one of those big years for the Cloudless Sulphur down here in the Washington D.C./Chesapeake Bay region.
These may appear to be Orange Sulphurs in flight but have a more directional flight, and don't zigzag around in fields.
They tend to fly along linear features such as weedy, sunny road edges in wooded areas, but may be seen flying in a directional flight through open fields.

I have seen this condition in worn individuals, especially females.
It seems to occur chiefly in the Eastern Cloudless Sulphur - *Phoebis eubule* and is less common in the Tropical Cloudless Sulphur - *P. sennae marcellina*.
This is probably more a factor of aging, > rather than specific intake of a substance, but it would be interesting if > someone could elaborate on this.

It turned out to be a Cloudless Sulphur larva, no doubt having fed on Senna plants in our garden.
The following day, I found one additional Cloudless Sulphur caterpillar feeding on a nearby Senna.
I found no documented literature references on this species breeding in northern Virginia, though the species had been found breeding at Point Lookout, MD once in the late 1980's.

Though the three kinds of morning glories along my garden fences reached their flowering peak a week or so ago, they are still spectacular, constituting a beautiful, frilly palette of green, purple, pink and scarlet delightfully animated by a zipping community of hummingbirds, several kinds of bees and wasp, and, most spectacularly, lots of butterflies.
Two or three other butterfly species have briefly visited the Morning Glory fence but, in the end, in terms of butterflies, that fence is the domain of Cloudless Sulphurs and Gulf Fritillaries, and not much else.
