Cloudmakers -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The game was being developed as it was played, and while most players came to the plotlines after they had been solidified, the Cloudmakers group was constantly on the bleeding edge of the game, pushing the game's developers, influencing the plot.
Warnings and messages sent by Cloudmakers members to characters in the story regularly turned up in the plot, and designs/blueprints and databases produced by the group were referenced by and even featured on in-game websites and magazines.
The game developers had sketched out a large number of possible scenarios, not all of which could be developed; in some instances, Cloudmakers members determined (through their investigations) which parts of the game world became part of the story.

 fAf :: Ezine - reviews
The Cloudmakers group was founded on April 11, 2001 by a 24-year-old, Oregon-based computer programmer named Cabel Sasser1, one of thousands of movie fans who had started to notice a series of digitally distributed clues and narratives that seemed to be some kind of game, but one without clear rules, objectives or rewards.
Although many Cloudmakers were incredibly tech-savvy before beginning the game, as evident by their ability to navigate the massive digital systems of the game and to create a wide variety of digital documents and applications in support of the game, the Beast changed their subjective experience of that technology.
The urgency of the Cloudmakers regarding their future and their desire to play as if there are serious and real consequences will provide, I believe, a great opportunity in the near future for ambitious and successful social and political action.

The most interesting non-advertising opportunity that has presented itself since the introduction of ARG games in early 2001, has been the reaction of the "Cloudmakers" to the terrorist attacks on September 11 2001.
The "Cloudmakers" are a "collective detective" of about 7000 users who were incredibly active and successful at solving the first large-scale ARG, "The Beast".
Of course, they were unsuccessful, due to their own policing, but their failure with such a monumental challenge (something that American and foreign intelligence agencies are still figuring out) wasn't necessarily a nail in the coffin of ARGs as real-world tools.

Luckily, the thoughtful people at Cloudmakers (the mailing list for discussion of the game) have stored some of the original pages and 'extra features' so we can still have a look at them.
After several dozen people in the Cloudmakers mailing list used traditional and increasingly esoteric methods of trying to decode the binary sequences, we've come to the conclusion that there is no message.

I was one of the Cloudmakers moderators - the moderators (there were eight of them in total) were people who maintained the messageboards and ensured the smooth running of the community, as well as writing resources such as the Guide and Trail.
Many Cloudmakers were absolutely furious about this, thinking that Spherewatch must be in cahoots with the PMs and that they were at best ignoring Cloudmakers and at worst sidelining and directly insulting us.
Of course, as many Cloudmakers know, several of the PMs were present at the Los Angeles premiere, and that is in fact the reason why our trip to Seattle for the premiere was delayed until the 27th of July.

As it's progressed, the puzzles have gotten far too complicated for any one player to work out, and an online community called Cloudmakers has convened to solve them and crack the central mystery (the death of an engineer named Evan Chan) collaboratively.
Cloudmakers doesn't appear to have any direct connection to the puzzle-makers, but they approve.
What there's not much of among the Cloudmakers, surprisingly, is speculation, or even curiosity, about the film itself.

The Cloudmakers group was formed to solve the mystery surrounding the death of fictional character Evan Chan, which eventually turned out to be a game called "The Beast" by it's creators, and designed to promote the upcoming Steven Spielberg movie, A.I. The Cloudmakers group was formed on the Yahoo!
Known as "celia," this individual was first believed to be in-game due her strange conversational style and constant quoting from works and along themes that were also utilized within The Beast.
Certainly amongst the Cloudmakers, the main collective of players that followed the Beast, it's a bit harder to recognize success if it doesn't live up to the scale of that original experience.

You'll also need to watch out, because there is another document in the game, not written by the Cloudmakers, which also gives away the answers to some puzzles.
