All of Sayers' mystery novels are entertaining, skillfully plotted stories, and as the BBC's version of Clouds of Witness is very faithful to the original novel, it can't fail to be entertaining as well.
Clouds of Witness is a mystery with an intricate plot, requiring that viewers pay attention, and rewarding the attentive viewer with the pleasure of seeing the puzzle take shape and then seeing how all the pieces fit into place.

I don't doubt that a lower-class person who did a similar thing would have been treated quite differently from Mary, who not only gets off scott-free, her behavior is lauded before the House of Lords.
As another example, during the trial, the appearance of a particularly elusive witness is attributed to "Parker's diligence." While Parker is a diligent detective, one can't help but suspect that he might not have been quite so diligent if the accused had not been a) a Duke, and b) the brother of his friend.

In some respects Dorothy Sayers is a problematic author, and early in her career she struggled with what can only be called a tendency toward incessant clutter: a wordy style, an often awkwardly expressed fascination with the mechanics of timetables, and constant reference to erudite academia that frequently verged on the downright obscure.
But with CLOUDS OF WITNESS she found a very neat balance--and the result is not only the first clear sounding of Sayers' literary voice, it is also simply the best of her early works.
In this particular story, death unexpectedly arrives in the very bosom of the Wimsey family: the Duke has taken a rural manor for the hunting season, and when his sister's fiance is found shot to death in the small hours of the morning he is himself accused.

I first read CLOUDS OF WITNESS in the 1960s and in the 1970s I saw Ian Carmichael play Lord Peter Wimsey -- he did it well but I felt he was too cheerful and hail-fellow-well-met for the role.
Shrewd phrases by Dorothy Sayers abound, for example, the Duchess is characterised as someone 'whose misfortune it was to become disagreeable when she was unhappy.'.
My conclusion is that Clouds of Witness by Dorothy Sayers is still well worth reading or rereading today.

Clouds of Witness Summary Study Guide
With the younger son of a duke as the detective hero, Clouds of Witness, like the other Wimsey novels, creates a world of immemorial aristocratic values that might seem at first impervious to social concerns.
Indeed Sayers has often been called a snob and accused of anti-Semitism and of patronizing the lower classes, and it must be conceded that she does to some extent share these values with the British reading public of the 1920s.
