Parclo interchange - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The parclo interchange (short for partial cloverleaf interchange) is a successor to the cloverleaf interchange.
The parclo interchange was developed by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation [1] as a replacement for the cloverleaf on 400-Series Highways, removing the dangerous weaving patterns and allowing for more acceleration and deceleration space on the freeway.
In addition, the Solomon Pond Road interchange on I-290 in Northborough, Massachusetts was converted from a B2 interchange to a B4 interchange in the mid-1990s with the construction of the Solomon Pond Mall.

 The Cloverleaf
Cloverleaf interchanges were comparatively cheap - the only other free-flow intersection with less bridges involved is a large traffic circle, which, (luckily) early engineers realized, would be a huge disaster if placed at the intersection of two high-speed freeways.
The interchange to the left is at the intersection of CA 170 and Victory Boulevard in the northeastern suburbs of Los Angeles.
The next interchange to the north, at CA 170 and Sherman Way, is similar to this one; the northbound (eastern) half has the braided loop ramps, but the southbound (western) half of the interchange has only two ramps, creating a half-diamond with a stoplight at the intersection with Sherman Way.

"H" Interchange: This interchange is so called because it resembles the letter "H." In the illustration, two "T" interchanges are used to connect the freeway to the surface street, hence the nickname.
Cloverleaf crossover: Two freeways cross over themselves, so that the travel lanes are reversed when they pass through the interchange.
Four cloverleaf ramps are placed in the middle of the interchange.

The diamond interchange is the most common type where a major facility intersects a minor highway.
Cloverleaf or partial cloverleaf designs may be used in lieu of a diamond when development or other physical conditions prohibit construction in a quadrant, or where heavy left turns are involved.
The full cloverleaf weaving maneuver is not objectionable when the left-turning movements are relatively light, but when the sum of traffic volumes on two adjoining loops approaches about 1,000 vehicles per hour, interference occurs, which results in a reduction in the speed of the mainline traffic.

Cloverleaf interchange - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A cloverleaf interchange is a two-level interchange in which left turns (in countries that drive on the right) are handled by loop roads (US: ramps, UK slip roads).
The cloverleaf was patented in the United States by Arthur Hale, a civil engineer in Maryland, on February 29, 1916.
The cloverleaf was patented in Switzerland on October 15, 1928.

The typical diamond interchange ramp departs from the mainline roadway such that a speed reduction generally is not necessary in order for a driver to reasonably safely negotiate an exit maneuver from the mainline onto the ramp roadway.

 Interchanges: Cloverleaf
As we'll see, the full cloverleaf is not considered as applicable in some situations now as it might have been a few decades ago; in several places cloverleafs have been replaced with either signalized interchanges or higher-capacity directional interchanges with flyovers.
A disadvantage to the plain cloverleaf is the "weaving" process, where drivers exiting one loop have to merge and cross other drivers entering the next one.
The first cloverleaf opened in New Jersey (at routes 4 and 25, which are now US 1/9 and NJ 35) in 1929; it is scheduled to be replaced with a diamond interchange around 2004.

I-95 and DE 141, Wilmington, DE
Interchange Description: This interchange is a variation on the venerable cloverleaf interchange.
Instead of I-295 traffic weaving across all of the southbound lanes of I-95 to the cloverleaf ramp to DE 141 southbound, drivers could exit here to DE 141 north, use the northeasterly cloverleaf to enter the right side of I-95 southbound, and then use the northwesterly cloverleaf to exit to DE 141 southbound.
Advantages: This interchange, had it not been nuilt as it is, probably would have been a standard cloverleaf interchange.

The higher elevation of the topmost ramps requires a longer approach compared to other interchanges, which can sometimes conflict with nearby interchanges on the freeway: there might be no room to fit a stack between adjacent interchanges.
For example, plans for the CA 17/CA 85 interchange in Los Gatos, Calif., were modified from a multilevel structure to a low-profile cloverleaf variant to appease the neighbors.
