Clovis culture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Clovis culture is a prehistoric Native American culture that first appears in the archaeological record of North America around 13,500 years ago, at the end of the last ice age.
A hallmark of Clovis culture is the use of a distinctively-shaped fluted rock spear point, known as the Clovis point.
The Clovis point is distinctively bifacial and fluted on both sides, a feature that possibly allowed the point to be mounted onto a spear in a way so that the point would snap off on impact.

Overall, the point measures 57 mm in length, is 28 mm wide (at 21 mm from the base) and is only 12 mm thick (mid blade at the point where the flutes end).

The Distribution of Fluted Paleoindian Projectile Points:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Classic Clovis points are made from bifa ce preforms, generally with flakes traversing the entire face of the biface, although some points from early contexts have flaking scars meeting in the middle of the blade.
Fluted or basally thinned points with concave bases, and concave (excurvate) lateral margins are found in Columbia, Ecuador (Mayer-Oakes 1984, 1986), and in the southern and southeastern portions of the South American continent, in Chil e, Argentina, and Uruguay (Politis 1991).
Dense concentrations of points occur in the East in portions of the Tennessee, Cumberland, and Ohio River valleys, or in the karstic terrain of northwest Florida.

This point, crafted from red jasper, reveals an unusual flaking style: its maker struck the point diagonally rather than from side to side, as was the norm.
Experts believe the first step the Clovis took in attaching their points to spears or knife handles was to smear tree resin on each point's flute to serve as a kind of glue.

 Clovis / Pre-Clovis Views
The Clovis first model does not require an early entry, but it does require the abandonment of the compound projectile point and the reversion from a BLADE technology back to the a flake technology.
This link is apparent in the early stages of Clovis point manufacture which were accomplished by removing large, flat percussion flakes from a biface.
The Clovis point was then invented almost overnight and it spread across the in place population in a very short time.
