I've always had, and the recipes I find describe, a Club as a double decker with turkey (chicken in the old days) on one level and a BLT on the other.
Club sandwich's around here typically have the 3 slices of toast, the blt part along with both ham and turkey.
I just think the "club" refers to a triple decker of some sort, as long as there is a BLT on one side.

I've never gone the club sandwich route, though, so can't speak to the quality of bacon, etc. But, I suspect it'd be good.
There, a competently engineered turkey club is the norm, not the oddity, as it is in the culinary desert 800 miles to the west in which I now live.
I too love a Turkey Club, and I'll even put up with the processed stuff, but on more than one occassion my sandwich has been served dry, and I've had to request mayonnaise and spread it myself onto the little triangle slices, which is a mess.
