Clusia rosea: A Strangler That Is Not A Fig
In the case of Clusia, CAM photosynthesis apparently aids in the establishment and growth of epiphytic seedlings until their aerial roots reach the soil and a permanent source of moisture and nutrients.
Clusia rosea was introduced into the Hawaiian Islands, and on the wet, northern coast of Kauai it lives up to its "boa constrictor" habit by strangling other trees.

Invasiveness: Clusia rosea is widely planted in Hawai'i and is known to spread from initial plantings.
In Clusia, CAM is useful during the epiphytic seedling stage until aerial roots are able to reach the ground and draw up nutrients and moisture.
Island of Maui distribution: On Maui, Clusia rosea is densely distributed in lowland urban areas of Kahului, Lahaina, Kihei, Makawao, Haiku, and Hana.

Clusia is a genus of Neotropical species of shrubs and trees, with about 40 species native to Panama.
Physiologically they are unique amongst trees, because some species such as Clusia rosea use a special water-conserving form of photosynthesis known from desert cacti, the so-called CAM pathway, whereby CO2 is fixed at night.
Other Clusia species are regular C3 plants exhibiting CO2 fixation during daytime only.
