 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Dilleniidae -- Spring 1999
This family of rather highly specialized individuals is related to the hypericoid members of the Clusiaceae, having a common seed and stem anatomy (Takhtajan 1997).
The highly specialized nature of the plant, and Cronquist's suggestion that the relationship between Clusiaceae and Elatinaceae "is more likely collateral" and probably reflects some "sort of close parallelism" is supported by associating the two in different orders.
Cronquist (1981) divides Clusiaceae (also known as the nomenclaturally acceptable, alternative name Guttiferae) into two subfamilies, the Clusioideae Burnett with some 33 genera and 500 species found mainly in tropical regions and the more temperate Hypericoideae Choisy with some nine genera and 550 species.
