This is the standard, I think, although one can certainly argue that a good clutch hitter is a hitter who hits well under pressure, regardless of what he does the rest of the time.
First, it should be noted that by "clutch hitters," all the analysts are thinking of players who perform better under pressure than when not under pressure.
Elias came up with its own definition of "clutch," defined as any at-bat in the seventh inning or later, with the batter's team trailing by three runs or less (or four runs if the bases were loaded).

Thus, the designated hitter rule, when maximized, potentially improves all facets of the quality of play: more hitting (as everyone agrees), better pitching and defense, and faster players on the bases in clutch situations.
The designated hitter rule improves pitching by allowing pitchers to come out of the game when they become ineffective, rather than due to managerial moves based on the dictates of the game.
If the designated hitter rule was a drastic alteration or just increased offense, I would be against it, but neither is true.

Barry was known as a clutch hitter despite his.243 career average — no AL shortstop drove in more runs than he did from 1909 to 1917.
Connie Mack pieced together a tremendous baseball team in the first decade of the 20th century, built in large part, around his famous "$100,000 Infield." At the time, Mack claimed that even that lofty dollar-amount would not pry the four star players away from him.
He was rumored to have kept frozen baseballs handy to insert into the game when his pitcher's were on the mound.

 Playing Under Pressure
If a hitter is averaging.333 and gets a hit one time in three clutch situations, he is performing well in the clutch...normal performance under pressure is the goal, not super performance.
Normal performance is possible in pressure situations because of proper concentration; in a pressure situation, the athlete must train himself to concentrate on the task at hand rather than allow his concentration to center on the situation..
The objective under pressure should not be to play super because that is an unreasonable goal; the objective of an athlete should be to play normally under pressure.
