Clutching at Straws - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Clutching at Straws is the fourth studio album of the progressive rock band Marillion.
It was released in 1987 and was the last album before Fish left the band.
Much of the musical material was then used on Seasons End with the new singer Steve Hogarth, while the lyrics ended up in some form on Fish's solo albums.

MARILLION Clutching at Straws reviews and MP3
Most of the songs written and composed for "Clutching at Straws" are intended to be breathed and lived intensively by the listener, and the album achieves that important commitment: it drives you through your inner fears, your captivated feelings and brings out the sensitivity locked away in you.
Clutching at straws was definitely a bit of a disappointment for me. Having been introduced to this fabulous band by their illustrous debut Script and having experienced that these guys were able to continue at that high level on its successors, this one really falls from the cliff.
Clutching At Straws marks the end of an era as this was the final farewell from Fish to the fans, although he would pop up with a solo carrier.

Straw's article, one of the first defences of the constitution to be made by an important cabinet minister, deserved more attention than it received - not least because it was riddled with inaccuracies and blunders.
We liked Straw's claim that if Britain is able to negotiate a treaty which protects its vetos on tax, social security, defence, areas of criminal law and EU funding, "the constitution on which the British public votes will not establish a tyranny, nor found a superstate."
Straw rounds off by claiming that Britain's security and prosperity depend on being at the heart of Europe.

So when the band was heading into the studio to record their fourth album, Clutching At Straws clearly the pressure was on the band to produce another hit, notably to hearken on the success that the band was building in the US.
Enter Clutching At Straws, an album which like the three albums before it, is a cryptic and maniacal themed album, in which lead singer/lyricist Fish embarks on his personal life issues within each song as the band growing in confidence, supply memorable music to each song.
Within Europe, Clutching At Straws was a major hit, reaching the Top 10 again, but barely missing the Top 100 album chart in the US.

The band's final album with Fish as vocalist and lyricist, it unfortunately did not gain the acclaim of its predecessor and those put off by the flaws evident in their earlier work may never have had a chance to re-assess the band on the basis of the strengths present here.
Clutching at Straws is probably Marillion's high point.
Clutching at Straws is not a feel-good record (despite the inclusion of the up-beat boogie of Incommunicado) and will not appeal to everyone but it's a masterpiece of booze sodden despair and the perfect soundtrack for those nights where you want nothing more than to sit, drink and mope.

For the uninitiated, "Clutching At Straws" is an historically relevant and musically accessible place to dive into the pool and test the water.
Extending from the theme of growing up too fast that was at the core of 1985's "Misplaced Childhood," "Straws" examines the trappings of adulthood and responsibility, most notably the temptation to drown one's sorrows and frustrations.
"Clutching At Straws" is the only album where, from hearing only the first 10 seconds of the first track, I knew it would be a masterpiece.

Ground and Sky review - Marillion - Clutching at Straws
In order to capitalise on their success, Marillion needed to follow up with a strong album, which this is; and preferably with another hit single, which was provided by "Incommunicado." They also needed to keep their personnel together, but unfortunately Fish was to depart shortly after work started on a fifth studio album.
Straws are short, used to inhale cocaine and of course clutched at.
The two CD re-release of Clutching at Straws contains a bonus disc which has the very early demo tapes of a projected fifth studio album.

In different tracks, its different things that are the highlights for me - throughout most of Clutching At Straws it is Rothery's guitar and Kelly's keys - not to leave out Fish's vocals, of course, because most of what resonates with me is Fish's lyrics.
Clutching is not a new album by any means, though if you aren't familiar with the Marillion back catalogue, having just discovered them through their more recent releases, it will be new to you.
Given that the members of the band were heading in different directions at the time, that doesn't come as too surprising.

If Jack Straw is to be believed, he decided to intervene in the Mike Tyson affair to prevent some hapless immigration official having to square up to the fighter at Heathrow airport.
He would also undoubtedly have been aware of the effect it would have had on thousands of fans who had already bought tickets for the fight at the end of the month.
It also appears that Mr Straw may have been hit with compensation claims from some of the business interests who would have lost millions if Tyson had been barred.

I made an appointment for a clutch replacement at a local shop that I had been told was very good.
After I got there to have the clutch replaced, I had this conversation: (this is an approximation, but it is an incident I remember well - I did leave off a whole lot of swearing I did at the end though).
I drove it to the garage, and told another mechanic what the problem was and what had already been done, and that I wanted a new clutch put in.

The building - a live/work space comprising offices in one wing (No 9) and living quarters in the other (No 10), both raised from the ground by rather surreal columns - meshes elements of the steel-obsessed hi-tech aesthetic with recycled wood and concrete.
A wall of 550 straw bales insulates the living quarters, and 'militaristic' cement-filled sandbags and quilted sheets of silicon-faced fibreglass cloth envelop the office spaces (Till and Wigglesworth work on the upper floor, and there's another practice on the lower floor) to muffle the noise of the trains thundering past.
Almost as flexible as this confluence of rustic and hi-tech materials is the way in which the live and work spaces bleed into each other.

A worthy successor to "Catching Water in a Net" (2001), Abramo's second in the San Francisco-based Jake Diamond PI series is a clever and well-crafted detective novel, gritty enough to satisfy hard-boiled readers but not so dark that it will put off more traditional mystery fans.
Abramo keeps his readers guessing, and the good guys are not always what they seem in "Clutching at Straws." The author knows how to spin a good, punchy yarn, and his atmosphere-soaked tale moves along at a sprightly clip.
Abramo echoes themes from some of the great crime writers past and present, adding a great deal of his own...handled with aplomb and wit.
