Nat' Academies Press, Biographical Memoirs V.61 (1992)
Coombs realized, as did other psychometricians, that the measurement of psychological attributes cannot be carried out using the standard logic of physical measurement that is based, in one form or another, on the concatenation of objects and is carried out by the counting of units.
Coombs' contribution to the analysis of preference, however, is not limited to the investigation of its formal structure and its psychological underpinnings.
Coombs applied these notions to a wide array of psychological problems, ranging from judgments of the severity of crimes to the pattern of citation in psychological journals, and from preferences concerning family composition to the problems of risk perception and risk preferences, to which he devoted much of his research.

Coombs' method - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Coombs' method, created by Clyde Coombs, is a voting system used for single-winner elections in which each voter rank-orders the candidates.
Note that although Coomb's method chose the Condorcet winner here, this is not necessarily the case.
The Coombs' method is vulnerable to three strategies: compromising, push-over and teaming.

Clyde reminds us in the Preamble that the formation of reliable plated through-holes is one of the 20th's Century's technical marvels, and should deserve extensive coverage in the handbook since this technology is at the core of PWB fabrication.
Clyde brushes this trivia issue away elegantly by using both terms interchangeably.

Active Skim View of: Clyde Hamilton Coombs
CLYDE HAMILTON COOMBS July 22, 1912-February 4, 1988 BY AMOS TVERSKY CLYDE COOMBS will be remembered by his fellow psychologists and other social scientists for his seminal contributions to the analysis of qualitative measurement and multidimensional scaling, and for his innovative models of conflict and choice.
Coombs' major contribution consists of his creative analysis of the qualitative structures that arise from similarity and preference data, and the insightful applications of this analysis to many psychological problems.
Contrary to the classical assumption of risk aversion according to which all people minimize the risk component, Coombs argued that different individuals have different ideal levels of risk at the same level of expected value, and that people choose between gambles in order to achieve the level of risk they desire.

(6) MandF argue in the same spirit as Clyde Coombs (1964), who distinguished between "observations" and "data" (he dealt only with observations in the form of numbers).
What MandF call data, Coombs called observations, which only became data after application of one of the scaling techniques coming to fruition and/or being developed by Coombs.
The spirit is that information, whether qualitative or quantitative, comes to every researcher first in a raw form that must be refined before it can be used to make inferences.

Comparisons vs. Preferences   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
A sweeter cup should, in general, taste sweeter to everyone (and, when we have relative similar amounts of sugar, we get proportions rather than perfection in the numbers deciding one way or the other.)
In the case of preferences, the person parameter ("ideal point" in the language of Clyde Coombs) plays a central role.
Taking the sweetness of coffee example again, the person is asked which of each pair of cups of coffee the person prefers as to sweetness, not which is sweeter (irrespective of the person's preference).
