Clyde Crashcup - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Clyde Crashcup (voiced by Shepard Menken), is a fictional character from the early 1960s animated television series The Alvin Show, a scientist in a white coat whose experiments invariably failed.
Clyde had one of the four segments, and the Chipmunks starred in the other three (two of which were sing-alongs).
Crashcup later had a special guest spot in the modern Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon episode "Back to Alvin's Future", in which he showed up in the time of the new show with a time machine and brought the modern Chipmunks back to his time, where they temporarily switched places with the Alvin Show Chipmunks.

Crashcup made a single cameo appearance in an episode of Alvin and the Chipmunks.
After the death of Ross Bagdasarian in 1972, the Chipmunks' careers stalled until NBC showed interest in the original show and released a new album of contemporary songs performed by the Chipmunks.

Clyde Crashcup was a crazy inventor, in the grand tradition of Gyro Gearloose, O.G. Wotasnozzle and Wallace, of Wallace & Grommit.
Clyde's inventing career began with the first Saturday morning TV version of Alvin & the Chipmunks, which debuted on October 4, 1961.
An exception was the episode in which Clyde invented a wife — her voice was done by June Foray (Rocky the Flying Squirrel, Witch Hazel).

A separate segment featured somewhat egotistical scientist Clyde Crashcup lecturing viewers on his latest creations, which turned out not to be as great as he thought they were.
While they lacked Clyde Crashcup, Alvin, Simon, and Theodore now did have big-name guest visitors such as Dolly Parton, as well as wilder comedy premises.
The best of these for longtime fans had to be "Back to Alvin s Future," where their old buddy Clyde Crashcup drove a time-machine car to tell the present-day Chipmunks that they must go back in time because Alvin in 1957 is now thinking about quitting his dreams of a musical career.

In any event, THE ALVIN SHOW was brilliantly conceived, written, designed and executed, with stellar talent such as June Foray and Shep “Clyde Crashcup” Menken joining the ubiquitous Ross Bagdasarian.
One aspect that made the original version of this show so hip was that the Chipmunks were depicted as child celebrities, with occasional looks “behind the music” at their lives spent in recording studios and on personal appearances.
The show also featured many cleverly cost-cutting song sequences based on tunes from their previous albums, as well as the unforgettably satirical “Clyde Crashcup And Leonardo” segments.
