He was born and raised in New York City, one of three sons of Robert and Carolyn Goodman, in an intellectual and socially-aware family.
In 1964, Goodman volunteered, along with fellow activist Mickey Schwerner, to work as part of the "Freedom Summer" project to register fls to vote in Mississippi.

Goodman, who'd grown up as a logger's daughter in Vernonia, moved into her 900-square-foot home just east of Century Drive 29 years ago following the death of her husband Clyde at age 56.

That's what prompted Goodman, who'd been forced to hook up to a neighbor's water supply with a garden hose, to contact Senior Services, which in turn got in contact with the Community Services Consortium, which realized that Goodman was a candidate for a block grant loan.
