 Co-operative Commonwealth Federation
Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), founded 1932 in Calgary as a political coalition of progressive, socialist and labour forces anxious to establish a political vehicle capable of bringing about economic reforms to improve the circumstances of those suffering the effects of the GREAT DEPRESSION.
Although the CCF had never held power nationally, the adoption of many of its ideas by ruling parties contributed greatly to the development of the Canadian welfare state.
In 1961 the CCF entered a new phase, and emerged from a founding convention as the NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE NDP The New Democratic Party of Canada was founded in Ottawa in 1961 at a convention which brought together the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and affiliated unions of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC).
Returning to Canada, Lewis practised law in Ottawa and in 1936 he became national secretary for the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.
At Regina in 1933, the new party adopted a manifesto and chose Woodsworth as its leader under the name the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.

 The Depression and third party development
By far the most momentous developments were the creation of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1932, and the founding of the Social Credit League in 1935.
They chose the name "Co-operative Commonwealth Federation: Farmer, Labour, Socialist" for their new party.
After 1933, in both British Columbia and Manitoba, the bedrock of CCF support was organized labour, in both cities and "company towns." The Manitoba CCF also gained strong support among less prosperous farmers in areas north of Winnipeg.

The main impetus for the formation of the new party came from farmers' organizations (including the UNITED FARMERS OF ALBERTA, which governed that province), a handful of academics in the LEAGUE FOR SOCIAL RECONSTRUCTION (LSR) and a GINGER GROUP of MPs in Ottawa allied with both farmer and trade-union organizations.

They wanted a society in which everyone would co-operate for the common good, hence the name "co-operative commonwealth." They were intensely critical of capitalism, which they believed encouraged inequality, selfishness, and greed.
It brought together a number of socialist, farm, and labour groups who wanted to reform society by changing the values on which it is based.
In 1933 in Regina, the CCF chose J.S. Woodsworth, a Winnipeg Labour Member of Parliament, as its first leader.

Indeed, the prairies have been a hotbed of co-operativism throughout Canada' s history, and it is not at all surprising that a political party called the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation came into existence there.
Some co-operative ventures may be unique to Canada: there is a co-operatively-owned funeral service in Manitoba, where a co-operatively-owned newspaper, the Winnipeg Citizen, once also arose.
Ironic, then, that the CCF could be held responsible for favouring crown corporations over co-operatives, perhaps charting an unfortunate detour for us all.
