The first Coachella festival was held on October 10th and 11th in 1999, just a mere three months after the disatrous Woodstock 99 festival.
Following the 2002 festival, Coachella began to generate large-scale interest, and the 2003 festival featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Beastie Boys (as well as a reunited Iggy Pop and The Stooges) drew the largest crowd yet.

About a 3 hour drive from Los Angeles, the town of Coachella (population 22,206) seems to pop up out of nowhere...
With all of the stages so spread out however, the weekend would be filled with tough choices.
Thank god for the event organisers who (barring sound problems) did an incredible job of keeping to the schedule, making the decision process considerably easier.
