Coahoma County was established February 9, 1836, and is located in the northwestern part of the state in the fertile Yazoo Delta region.
Clarksdale, one of the county seats, is now the largest and most important city in the county, and had a population of 7,500 in 1920.
In the county the population was spread out with 33.00% under the age of 18, 10.30% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 19.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who were 65 years of age or older.

Establishing Coahoma County Agricultural High School in 1924, Coahoma County became the first county in Mississippi to provide an agricultural high school for Negroes under the then existing “separate but equal” doctrine for education.
In 1950 Coahoma junior College became the first educational institution for Negroes to be included in Mississippi’s system of public junior colleges and to be eligible to share in funds appropriate by the Mississippi Legislature for the support of public junior colleges.
With the approval of the Board of Trustees of Coahoma Junior College and the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges, Coahoma Community College’s name was changed to Coahoma Community College, effective July 1, 1989.
