This summary of the research in and prehistory of Coahoma County is presented for the Arkansas readers who may not be familiar with the highly relevant Mississippi literature.
Mississippi Plain, the ubiquitous coarse shell tempered ware of late prehistory, is represented by 1126 sherds larger than one half inch.

In Mississippi in 1860 there were 481 farms of 1,000 acres or more, the largest size category enumerated in the census, and another 1,868 farms of 500-999 acres.

You remember that the state of Mississippi had not paid the Elvis Presley Trauma Center, commonly known as the Med, one thin dime for covering uninsured patients from north Mississippi.
Well, a group called Mississippi Friends of the Med shamed the Mississippi Legislature into appropriating a million dollars for the Med as part of a funding bill for Mississippi's only Level 1 trauma center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
One of those decisions was to challenge the Mississippi Department of Transportation's schedule for the widening Mississippi 6 from Batesville to Clarksdale.

Coahoma County was given a name meaning "red panther", from the Choctaw words `ko-i' ("panther", "wildcat") and `humma' or `homa' ("red"), but it is not known with certainty why this name was given.
Even though the county lies in the Choctaw district, it was formed at the time of the creation of counties in the Chickasaw district.
