 HISTORY
During the Coal Creek War of 1891 to 1892, Colonel Kellar Anderson, the commander of Fort Anderson, was captured by miners.
Impurities removed from coal mined from the area after 1977 were disposed in the Beech Grove Slurry Impoundment, in accordance with stringent SMCRA standards, until mining operations ceased in 1997.
The Coal Creek Watershed Foundation, Inc. (CCWF) was established as a non-profit group to improve the quality of life in the watershed.

Initially, the Coal Creek watershed group formed to restore the creek so it would support a trout population that it once did and to prevent pollutants in the creek from entering the Clinch River, one of Tennessee's most popular trout fisheries.
The Coal Creek watershed is twenty-five miles north of Knoxville, Tennessee and has the towns of Briceville and Lake City in its boundaries.
Coal has been mined for 150 years upstream from Lake City and some of the old mines are now adversely impacting the streams by discharging water with high concentrations of iron and other minerals.

Legislation was enacted that allowed southern states to lease convict laborers to private industry as forced labor to work in coal mines, plantations, railroads, etc. Not only did states save money by not having to build prisons, but the revenue from the convict labor force was a significant part of the budgets in southern states.
The Welsh built schools and churches with Coal Creek becoming home to as many as 150 Welsh families by the early 1870s.
Another labor dispute erupted in 1891 between the Tennessee Coal Mining Company in Briceville and its miners after new laws allowed miners to elect one of their own as a check-weighman to verify how much coal was mined.
