He lived on Difficult Creek where he was the second owner of a saw mill and a tub mill, the first owner being a Mr.
He and his son W. Neville were rural mail contractors for a number of years on the route that led from Mount Storm to Claysville on the New creek Drive.

The State Coal Mineclosed in 1968 and is now operated by Parks Victoria as a visitor experience, complete with underground tours and a well-presented museum.
The quaint fishing village is off the beaten track and, consequently, more I ban 40 buildings in a Georgian and Victorian architectural style still exist, including what is believed to be the first licensed hotel in Victoria (1842).

Barry then reminded us that at no time in its history has Victoria been self-sufficient in black coal because all Victorian coal is only steaming coal which is unsuitable for such uses as town gas production (for which N.S.W. coal has to be used).
Barry began with an overview of the discovery of black coal in Victoria - how it was first discovered in cliffs at Cape Patterson from ships conveying Hovell back to Westernport for him to identify it.
Coal was first discovered in the Korumburra area by James Brown, in 1872, whilst he was returning overland from the Stockyard Creek (Foster) gold diggings.

West of the dock the Moonee Ponds Creek was used as a canal access for coal for railway locomotives.
The area includes the railway yards west of Spencer Street, Victoria Dock and land westwards to the Moonee Ponds Creek, and part of South Wharf along the Yarra River.
In 1985 Victoria Dock and North Wharf's share of cargo was 4%, and several country railway lines were undergoing closure.

The Loy Yang open cut coal mine and power station, south east of the town, is one of Australia’s biggest engineering projects and represents half the viable reserves of coal in the Latrobe Valley.
The town was settled in 1846 when the first settler Dr Edward Hobson built his hut on the banks of the Traralgon Creek, which rippled down from the Strzelecki ranges.

It is in a folk museum called Coal Creek Heritage Park in Korumburra, Victoria.
This and one other (in better condition) in a railway museum are the only 2 complete examples to have survived into preservation as far as I know.

There were maps on the walls and an Honor Roll with its sad crosses, Just like hundreds of schools all over Victoria.
At the Railway Station there was a 1910-15 K Class steam train engine with sound effects of engine, whistles and steam blowing.
Next door was the church built at Krowera in 1899, when church- going was a religious and a social event; it provided a break from work and gave the settlers a chance to meet with their neighbours.

One canal that you have not mentioned, that was built and is still relatively intact, is the Railway Coal Canal.
Seen also is Victoria Dock (originally West Melbourne Dock) which was constructed in 1887-1892.
