		Coal deposits were found in the hills surrounding Renton as early as 1853.
		Coal mine shafts in the area were often driven deep into a hillside, at a 12-percent grade, reaching lengths of more than a mile underground.
		Because coal seams quickly descended at sharp angles under the hills east of Renton, the incline and sudden changes in track angle required that the wheels of these coal cars be closely set together (as seen).

		Coal Hill School is a fictional school in the television series Doctor Who.
		The Coal Hill School is the setting of much of the very first episode of the series, "An Unearthly Child", first broadcast in November 1963 and set in the same year.

		In the mid 1950s the Gulf Smokeless Coal Company, Winding Gulf Collaries, and McAlpin Coal Company were consolidated into Winding Gulf Coals, Inc. I believe this concern was absorbed by Westmoreland Coal Co., who had their regional headquarters here in the 1970s and '80s.
		This is a rare example of a detailed documentation of the formation of a coal company/mine/camp being available to the general public.
		Coal mining historian Mick V. tells me that the church is build on a Beaver Coal Company lease and if it is ever formally abandoned it will be torn down.

	Legacy
		Legislation was enacted that allowed southern states to lease convict laborers to private industry as forced labor to work in coal mines, plantations, railroads, etc. Not only did states save money by not having to build prisons, but the revenue from the convict labor force was a significant part of the budgets in southern states.
		The Welsh built schools and churches with Coal Creek becoming home to as many as 150 Welsh families by the early 1870s.
		Another labor dispute erupted in 1891 between the Tennessee Coal Mining Company in Briceville and its miners after new laws allowed miners to elect one of their own as a check-weighman to verify how much coal was mined.

	Church History
		As the coal mines brought in more and more immigrants from Central Europe, it became apparent that there needed to be a catholic church to minister to the spiritual needs of these people.
		Jewasinski died August 19, 1918, in the flu epidemic and was buried in the Catholic Cemetery under the large crucifix.
		The building of the school, rectory and finally, the church on US 19 in Oak Hill has proved to be an excellent decision.
