Binary Coalescence   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Coalescing binary neutron stars are among the most promising sources of gravitational radiation for detection by interferometers such as LIGO, VIRGO and GEO.
The coalescence regime probably lies at or beyond the upper end of the frequency range accessible to broad-band detectors, but it may be observed using specially designed narrow band interferometers or resonant detectors.
Recent studies suggest that binary inspiral due to the effects of energy loss by the gravitational radiation reaction (GRR), and the eventual coalescence of the component stars, may be detectable by these instruments at a rate of several per year.

Fluent NEWS - Fall 2000 - Breakup and Coalescence Modeled
Coalescence occurs when two or more bubbles collide and the film of liquid between them thins and breaks.
Coalescence depends upon turbulent fluctuations in the liquid phase that force nearby bubbles together (Prince and Blanch, 1990).
Here, the maximum holdup is shown, where the small bubbles, generated by the breakup, have risen in the column but have not yet branched into either the group that undergoes recirculation or the group that continues to ascend.

Hot Tear Formation and Coalescence Observations in Organic Alloys
In the same manner, the coalescence temperature of dendrites across a grain boundary (intergranular coalescence temperature), Tcg, and within a grain (intragranular coalescence temperature), Tcd, have been evaluated, as shown in Figures 7a and 7b and Figures 8a and 8b, respectively.
Coalescence, or bridging of dendrite arms, is established when the liquid film between two adjacent dendrites or two grains is no more continuous (see Figure 7b and Figure 8b).
Indeed, coalescence is a key parameter for the understanding of the mechanical property of the mush and of the hot tearing phenomenon.

During the coalescence of a drop with a planar interface, a hole is generated by the rupture of a microscopic film between the drop and interface.
The coalescence process was recorded from underneath the interface with the aid of a high speed digital camera and a prism.
The experimental portion of the project was aimed at capturing the time of coalescence and the size of the secondary drop that formed after coalescence had finished.

Expected coalescence times and segregating sites in a model of glacial cycles
We used a coalescent approach (Kingman, 1982a,b; Hudson, 1983; Tajima, 1983), and obtained expressions for the expected coalescence time and the number of segregating sites of two sequences, sampled in the present interglacial period.
We also made the usual coalescent assumption that the population or deme size is much larger than the number of sequences sampled (see Hudson, 1990).
In order to obtain an expression for the mean coalescence time, we made use of the fact that the expectation of a sum of random variables is equal to the sum of the expectations of each random variable.

Bubble distributions and dynamics: The expansion-coalescence equation
Coalescence first as a binary (bubble-bubble) and later as a (possibly singular percolating) multibody process may thus be central to eruption dynamics.
The introduction of decompressive expansion is theoretically straightforward and yields the nonlinear partial integrodifferential expansion-coalescence equation; we argue that this is a good model for bubble-bubble dynamics in a decompressing magma.
The validity of the expansion coalescence model is empirically supported by analysis of samples of pumice and lava.

It is clear from this that coalescence occurs faster in smaller populations, as we saw earlier.
The rate of coalescence among k genes in a population of N_g genes is approximately k \left(k-1 \right) / 2N_g, as long as N_g \gg 2 k \left(k-1\right).

One such way (although, as we will soon see, not the most important) is through collision and coalescence.
Cloud droplets will be carried by air currents within the cloud, and if they bump into each other, it is called a collision.
Although this process is important, especially in the tropics and in increasing the size of raindrops, it falls short of being the primary mechanism for the formation of raindrops.
