Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury, on the north bank of the River Thames in Essex, was the home of HMS St Clement, sometimes described as HMS St Clements, a Combined Operations and landing craft base between 1943 and 1946.
The fort itself dates back to the height of the Victorian era, having been built on earlier gun emplacements in 1874 –; and is one of the finest surviving armoured river forts.
Coalhouse Fort contains a labyrinth of underground passages and chambers, and is a labour of love for a loyal army of volunteers who since 1983 have been working hard to restore and maintain the place, many parts of had fallen into a poor state of repair.

Coalhouse Fort in East Tilbury, Thurrock is in the running to win the prize and viewers are asked to vote for the fort to help ensure its survival and increase public access as a heritage attraction.
Coalhouse Fort was completed in 1874 and is one of the best surviving examples of a Victorian armoured casement fort, meaning that guns were installed in defensive covered positions to stop attacking warships reaching London.

When first envisaged Coalhouse Fort was expected to accommodate 28 guns on the first floor and a further 28 guns in open positions on the roof.
The occupants were mostly Wrens, who in conjunction with the detachment at Cliff Fort on the opposite (Kent) bank of the Thames, controlled the “Degaussing Loop” cables laid on the riverbed that indicated the effectiveness of the Anti-Magnetic Mine Countermeasures.
During the 1914-18 war the Fort was manned by units of The Royal Garrison Artillery and the Royal Engineers in August 1914 of about 200 Officers and Men until reductions in numbers caused by the need for experienced Heavy Artillery personnel in France and Belgium 1916 brought the numbers down to 120.

Coalhouse Fort is located on the northern bank of the River Thames near East Tilbury, Essex.
It was built (along with Cliffe Fort and Shornmead Fort, which are, respectively, on the southern bank of the River Thames near Cliffe and Gravesend in Kent) to ensure that no enemy incursions could be made up the River Thames and into the centre of London.
In the case of Coalhouse Fort, the supervising officer was one Colonel (later General) Charles Gordon RE.

Although essentially completed by the 1880's, the existing fort was expanded, first during the first world war, and again during the 1940's, when the fort played an important part of the battle of Britain, both warning London that the Luftwaffe were on their way, and by targeting the plans themselves.
There are small windows that overlook the car park, but when a car did pass the fort the light from the headlights shone on the wall beside where we could see the grey lights, and the headlights were clearly much brighter than these 'other lights'.
Back in those days the fort was in a far poorer state than it is now, with many gaps in the fencing, thus making it an ideal location for such activity.

In this ancient Fort are the remains of an extensive system of approximately 18" gauge, including a turntable manufactured by Boiling and Lowe of London, with a line to the jetty outside the sea-gate of the Fort.
Forts were built in this remote spot in 1539, 1779, 1795, and in the 1860’s, but the present building seems to date entirely from the nineteenth century.
The Fort is set some way back from the sea from which it is separated by a great embankment, then a broad moat, then the sea-wall, and finally the mud-flats.

Coalhouse needs an enormous ammount of money spent on it, as shown on the restoration programme, its a bit of a hotch potch.
All the work at Coalhouse is done by volunteers and I am confident that their efforts will certainly put the fort 'on the map' over the next couple of years.
The fort museum has also been improved to cover the three phases of the forts history and is always on the lookout for donations or loans to enhance the collection.

When first built the Fort had an inner gorge abutting onto the face (or outer) wall of the Fort as it curved around from the West Corner via the south to the Latrines in the North.
These are found in the far northeastern corner of the Fort with a row of 7 lavatory cubicles and then a row of 11 urinals stalls, each stall demarcated by a vertical slate panel connected at the top by an iron bar.
In the late 1960’s and early 70’s unauthorised persons clambered into the Fort by means of trees that had fallen against the wall of the Fort from parts of the earth “Merlon” or mound and proceeded to attempt to rob the Barracks and Offices of their internal fittings.

The fort was designed for 28 guns in granite protected casemates together with another 28 guns mounted in the roof.
The whole site was surrounded by a sixty foot wide ditch.In the 1870's it was equipped with sixteen 9" and 11" RML guns plus four 12.5" RMLs By the turn of the century the smaller RMLs had been replaced by four 6" Breech Loading and four Quick Firing guns positioned on the roof.
It was in use until 1962 when it was sold and since 1983 the fort has been run by the Coalhouse Fort Project which is restoring the fort.

One of two forts, Coalhouse unfortunately seems to have drawn the short straw, in that its counterpart is maintained by the local authorities as a Tourist Attraction, whereas Coalhouse has been neglected and many parts are now in a very poor state of repair.
The fort as it stands today, was completed in 1874 on the site of previous gun batteries, although some modifications were made later on so that it could house more modern armament.
I understand that “Coalhouse Fort is considered one of the finest examples of an armoured casemated fort in Britain”.

The fort is an impressive complex of moats, ramparts and walls, which was mainly constructed in the late seventeenth century.
Shornemead Fort, its partner fort on the other side of the river, could work with it to seal the Thames with crossfire in a similar way to Coalhouse and Cliffe Forts.
Walk along the wall beside the fort and continue past it, where a road runs parallel to the wall for a short distance before it ends near the Tilbury Ferry buildings on the left.

A special tour of Coalhouse Fort, Tilbury was organised earlier this month when Chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Liz Forgan and Chief Executive of Thames Gateway South Essex Mary Spence visited Thurrock as part of a trip to the Thames Gateway area.
The fort, only open to the public at certain times during the year, needs substantial funding to be restored to its original condition, to make it accessible to the public and to provide a more interesting historical attraction.

In East Tilbury is this amazing fort built to defend the Thames and the city of London against invasion originally.
I'm not going to go into the history however as that is all available at www.coalhousefort.co.uk but I will tell you a tale of my evening spent with Paranormal Tours back in October of this year.
At this point I must add that the Fort is locked via a big metal gate/door and no one can get in or out and the entire group were accounted for.

Constructed in the late 17th century at a time when artillery was the dominant weapon, the fort was designed to withstand an artillery bombardment and was built low lying with earth embankments fronted by brick.
The fort remained garrisoned into the 1920's but its defences were never put to the test.

The Fort was garrisoned through both world wars and situated close to Tilbury Docks, one of the main embarkation points for the D Day landings.
In addition the Fort’s many artillery pieces were on display and guided tours of the Fort were conducted during the show.
