Topic: Coalition for Democratic Reform

  DLC: Reform! by Ed Kilgore
For Democrats, an insurgent political reform agenda could help finally put to rest perceptions that they are the party of Washington, the party that is most estranged from the mainstream values that are so rarely honored in Washington.
Democrats should lead another charge for campaign finance reform, insisting on tough Federal Elections Commission enforcement of existing laws, along with a ban on fund raising and contributions by lobbyists.
Democrats have nothing to lose but their reputation for complicity in the abuses of the current system, and everything to gain -- including a political system that works for the country.

 Money in Politics Reform
The reform proposals that follow include the most significant ones currently being advanced -- or already in place -- at the federal, state, and municipal levels.
A coalition of groups in Maine has placed a measure on their 1996 state ballot calling for a voluntary system of full public financing of state elections coupled with a ban on large contributions to candidates who reject public financing.
It is also important to remember that some of these reform measures are seen by their proponents as stepping stones toward other, more comprehensive proposals.

Coalition for Legislative Reform - 01-02-02 - Legislators ticketed, cited
The 14 Democrats either were co-sponsors of a measure to abolish termlimits for the speaker of the House or spoke on behalf of the idea on the House floor on Jan. 24, when it passed 111-39.
The coalition, made up of nine independent watchdog groups from across the political spectrum, also awarded a sickly looking houseplant to Rep. Gale Candaras for her especially vigorous opposition to the term limit on the House floor.
The reform coalition handed out a special "High Street" award yesterday to one lawmaker who claims to be an early victim of the dispute, Rep. Douglas Petersen, D-Marblehead.

The vote was also a result of the Democratic leadership’s failure to unify their reform coalition and the event demonstrates a useful lesson in practical politics.
When the bill went to the House, the bill’s traditional coalition, a majority of whom are Democrats, realized that the bill in its new form would be problematic for their constituents.
Many of the Democratic supporters worried that increasing the hard money limits would be a move in the wrong direction for campaign finance reform and a serious advantage for their Republican opponents.

The coalition is made up of public interest groups who have been involved with election reform for years, political parties, religious organization, and numerous groups whose primary focus has been issues related to, but not limited to, the environment, social justice, peace, women, seniors citizens, and labor.
The latter group has come to the realization that election reform needs to be a top priority for them because without it their ability to bring about the changes they are seeking will be greatly diminished, if not totally inhibited.

Making the Democratic Party a Party of Reform   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Democrats have worried for years about declining voter turnout, about voters who are only modestly interested in the issues, and about the alienation many voters seem to feel from government.
By reforming ourselves, we can both reduce the level of cynicism our supporters feel when voting for us and give voters who wouldn't have considered us otherwise a strong reason to consider us as a positive alternative to the other party.
While I don't expect any given set of reforms to be perfect, demonstrating through our actions that we think we can do better gives us a much stronger platform on which to ask for other kinds of change, and a real arena for discussing it.

Democratic structures at the municipal level can be arbitrarily altered by provincial governments without consent and even against the wishes of local citizens.
If democratic reform is going to happen in Canada, it will have to come from a grassroots initiative which both educates and mobilizes concerned citizens.

The Coalition further asked that those observers be given full and unfettered access to every aspect of the voting process, including, but not limited to, poll worker training procedures and classes; machine operations procedures; poll location opening and machine activation; actual voting; delivery of ballots and voting machines; counting of ballots; and certification of results.
While the Coalition applauded the Commission’s vote to bring in independent, experienced observers, it also recognized that it would have been far preferable for the Commission to obtain public input into the choice and selection of who the observer would be.
The stated aim of the Coalition, which was to protect the rights of voters irrespective of party, candidate, or issue affiliation was in stark contrast with the aim of the Political Action Committee, which could only accomplish its goals of “stopping” the candidate by “disenfranchising” voters who supported the candidate.

WASHINGTON - A diverse coalition that includes the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Catholic bishops, Hispanics and labor unions Thursday launched an attempt to push a comprehensive overhaul of the nation's immigration laws "over the finish line" in the Democratic-controlled Congress.
With President Bush and Democratic congressional leaders pledging bipartisan cooperation to confront one of the nation's most volatile issues, leaders of the group said the new Congress offers the best opportunity yet to pass a comprehensive immigration plan that would legalize millions of undocumented workers.
The Alliance for Immigration Reform 2007 reunites many of the advocacy groups from the previous congressional battle, including the National Council of La Raza, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Restaurant Association.

Reforms to the electoral system have focused on several methods of voting which are more proportional: the alternative vote (AV), the single transferable vote (STV), list PR, and the additional member system (AMS).
Such reformers might not even be interested in such business, were it not for the regime's stifling of the free flow of information.
In fact, reform across all the three aspects is impeded by the Tories, who have shown considerable opposition to real reform on any one of them.

The purpose of the Constitution Convention Coalition is to connect non-profits throughout Alabama in the common interest of drafting a new constitution through a representative, citizen-led constitutional convention.
The 1901 Alabama Constitution is a hindrance to the work of non-profits because it taxes families further into poverty, deters appropriate funding of social services and discourages citizen participation at all levels of government.
There are two options to reform the constitution; by amendment or by a convention.

The American Reform Party is also steadfast in its insistence that we maintain our personal freedoms and is not afraid to tackle oftentimes politically incorrect topics like immigration.

The Coalition for Civil Union Reform Legislation (CURL) is a non-partisan organization dedicated to the proposition that religious institutions as opposed to secular authority should define what marriage is for its members.
To this end, we at the Coalition for Civil Union Reform Legislation seek to amend the various state constitutions as regards the definition of marriage by promoting civil union legislation that would apply to everyone regardless of race, gender, religious, or sexual orientation.
We propose to repeal the state practice of issuing marriage licenses, and advocate instead that the states accept marriage certificates that would be issued by religious and civil authorities (churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, etcetera) and, in turn, issue a civil union certificate to the petitioning couple.

Over the last four decades The Bahamas has experienced the birth of many political parties, all subscribing to democratic principles, but none that has held power has done very much to educate the citizenry in the essence of those principles in a formal way.
It would be fairly safe to say that they were more imitative of institutions that are grounded in the underlying philosophy and ideology of democracy than true proponents of such; otherwise they would not operate like closed-door, secret organizations.
Even though a national constitution was designed by individuals who said that they wanted to liberate the people, and protect their rights with which they have been endowed by God, we still see the divisive politics of pain being exercised quite frequently.

It happened in 1972 when the leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP) walked into the A. Adderley Auditorium and mounted the stage during the Progressive Liberal Party Convention, was embraced by Sir Lynden Pindling, and officially welcomed back into the party that he had walked away from in 1965.
Nottage may be able to convince his followers that there is no philosophical difference between themselves and the PLP, that they are all moving in the same direction and it would be better if they moved together.
That notwithstanding, there will be others who believed in the cause of the fledgling party, who were recruited on the basis of that belief, who will be sorely let down and who will gravitate away from the PLP.
