  European Left - Some remarks concerning the creation of the Party of the European Left   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-29)
Many parties of the transforming European Left, after a phase of difficult reorientation of their politics after the upheavals of 1989/90, had reached the conclusion that it was high time to build up a more concrete collaboration, so as to convey a common profile to this European Left.
Upon invitation by the Greek coalition of the Left, the Movements and Ecology, SYNASPISMOS, there was carried out, in mid-March 2003, a work instruction - passed and agreed upon on occasion of the NELF meetings in Copenhagen and Paris (2002) - to strive actively for the creation of a European Left-wing Party.
The European Left is critical of capitalism and anti-capitalist and aims at a transformation of societies beyond the rule of capital;

  Coalition of the Left, of Movements and Ecology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Coalition of the Left, of Social Movements and Ecology (Shorter: Coalition or SYN from the Greek: Synaspismos, Συνασπισμός), initially, until 2004, called Coalition of Left and Progress, is a Greek political party of the radical - democratic left.
The ideology of SYN is influenced by Karl Marx, V.I. Lenin, Antonio Gramsci, Louis Althusser, Nicos Poulantzas, Eric Hobsbawm, Noam Chomsky, and the philosophers of the Frankfurt School.
Moreover, Synaspismos was the host party for the first Congress of European Left (29-30 October 2005), which concluded to the Athens Declaration of the European Left as the manifesto of the European Left party.

 Greek legislative election, 2004 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New Democracy party of Costas Caramanlis won a decisive victory in the elections, ending eleven years of rule by the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK).
PASOK was led into the elections by George Papandreou, who succeeded retiring Prime Minister Costas Simitis as party leader in February.
The results of the Coalition of Radical Left are compared with the 2000 results of the Coalition of the Left, of Movements and Ecology (Συνασπισμός της Αριστεράς, των Κινημάτων, και της Οικολογίας- Synaspismos tis Aristeras, ton Kinimaton, kal tis Oikologias), the main party of the coalition.

The movement for sustainable development is guilty of buying into the concept of "development" and ignoring the fatal contradiction between the latter and any meaningful concepts of ecological or cultural sustainability.
Movements in this mode want to use centralized and bureaucratic international organizations and agreements as instruments to impose universalized and standardized conceptions of rights and duties on a world of diverse cultures and values.
To the degree that they are successful, movements that begin with militant street action must alter their tactics and rhetoric as their issues move into the mainstream.
