	COALWOOD, WV
		COALWOOD, WV The model company town of Coalwood was constructed during the 1905-12 years by the Carter Coal and Coke Co. That company operated the mines and town at Coalwood until Consolidation Coal Co. purchased the operation (along with neighboring Caretta) in 1922.
		Incredibly, Coalwood was still a company town at this point, with the homes being rented to the miners and their families.
		The preparation plant was demolished in the 1990s, and Coalwood seemed destined to follow the pattern of declining coal camps with exhausted coal reserves and little prospects for the future.

		There is a stretch of houses along the main road (WV 16), then the main part of town extends back up the hollow from there; maybe 100 houses total today.

	Coalwood
		WV 16 turns at a right angle at this point and heads for Welch (directly behind where we are standing.) According to Coalwood historian David Goad, the tipple in Coalwood was torn down in 1959, and the Norfolk and Western Railroad began removing the tracks leading to the tipple in the same year.

		When Homer Hickam was growing up, Coalwood, WV was a typical coal-mining town of the 1950s, struggling to stay alive.
		All the women in Coalwood are shown to be strong women, a trait they must have to say goodbye daily to their husbands and sons who work in the dangerous mine and may not return that night.
		Hickam’s father is Coalwood, WV’s mine superintendent, whose devotion to the mine is matched only by his wife’s loathing for it.

		We started with a trip to Keystone, WV for an interview with the mayor of the town before we set back off for welch and then to Coalwood, WV, the setting for the movie "October Sky" and the hometown of Homer Hickum Jr.
		After we left Coalwood, the guys walked a ways and then got a ride into Iager, WV from a friendly passerby and I met them there.
		We then drove to Man, WV to attempt to make it up to Buffalo Creek, the sight of a massive flood on Feb. 26, 1972 that was caused when a series of shoddy dams a coal company made out of slury, or rock debri, gave way and wiped towns away and killed 126 people.

		My dad was Fed. Mine Safety Engineer having worked initially in Coalwood/Caretta, WV., then when Consol Coal Co. sold to Carter, we moved to Jenkins, Letcher Co., Ky, in 1934.
		While in Coalwood, Dad was one of the Mine Foremen as was Homer Hickam, Sr., until the later became Mine Supt., when Carter Coal took over.

		My better half has been bugging me to take here to WV to go to a small festival in Coalwood, WV for a few years now and recently I decided to give in to her wishes.
		But truthfully, part of the reason I gave in was b/c I figured since I'll be in WV anyway I might as well stay a few days extra to rent an ATV and go ride on the world famous Hatfield/McCoy trail system.
		I plan to spend 2 full days of riding (both days will be without my wife b/c she is flying back after the festival).
