  Deck & Coaming
The pencil line is the trim line, the coaming will be cut to this line when the tape has been applied and the epoxy cured.
The coaming has been trimmed on top of the deck, the new glass reinforcement was scraped and sanded, the whole deck was sanded and washed to remove amine blush, and the first fill coat has been applied.
The coaming has been trimmed to it's final shape around the outside, and close to final shape on the bottom.

With both the coaming and the hatch seals, I've used his techniques as a basis and then modified to work with other features I wanted to include.
I masked off the area about the coaming, and then hot glued florist's foam to the tape.
The Saran Wrap serves as the parting surface for the epoxy after the coaming lip is cured.

The two side coaming pieces, which run from the front of the cockpit to the transom, were tapered their last two feet.
Next, he would grab the coaming at the front of the cockpit and bend it until it was in postion, flush with the edge of the decking.
The final steps in the coaming installation process were to fillet the coaming/deck joints with peanut butter and to use the router to round-over the underside of the decking below the coaming.

Both the wood and fiberglass coamings can be attached with Velcro on the inside edge of the coaming.
This also allows use of the coaming without a base plate, though a temporary base plate is used for construction only.
Due to it's narrow profile, the wood coaming is free standing and uses no machine screw connections as are used with the HDPE and fiberglass coamings.

Coaming   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The coaming was made from 1/16 inch thick veneers of P. mahogany which were laminated together around the form, (the largest in the photo) then cut on a band saw to make the various parts needed.
A laminate with the same dimensions as the coaming lip was epoxied under the deck.
The edges of the deck were sanded to contour the mating surface with the coaming vertical part, sealed with epoxy and allowed to set-up, then the vertical part of the coaming was epoxied to the deck and the under-deck parts.

The basis of the guidance is a characterization of the hazards and risks addressed by the coaming regulations, resulting in adjusted layouts that eliminate the coaming requirement for at least one door, providing the desired access to passenger accommodation areas.
It may be appropriate to replace the weathertight door with coaming with an improved access doorway, for example, a weathertight door with a coaming of reduced height, and protective drainage.

RoguePaddler - Building the Ultimate Expedition Kayak
I had already built the vertical rise of the coaming, so all that was needed was to trim it to the proper height and form a mold for the lip.
By adjusting the tension of the tape, the angle at which I attached the tape to the deck, and the thickness of the foam, I could control the shape and angle of the coaming lip all the way around the cockpit.
Afterward, I used a block plane around the outside of the coaming lip to plane the lip down to the approximate width I desired.

 Greenland-Style Tuiliqs
It cinches around the coaming and under the paddler's armpits and is held up by a pair of shoulder straps.
For the coaming of a modern recreational kayak, the hem of the tuiliq is drawn tight around the cockpit coaming with a bungie cord.
In Skinboats of Greenland, he relates the experience of Peter Petrussen who, as a young kayaker, was embarrassed by the length of the tuiliq sewn for him by his mother: "It looked too much like a girl's skirt." The latest fashion (in the early 1900s) had been toward shorter tuiliqs.

This picture shows a coaming in a partially constructed boat where there is a wide enough seat-back to sit on, but the winches would still be mounted low.
In this case, all of the volume inside the coaming is accessible from the cockpit.
An alternative approach is to have the forward part of the coaming sealed from the cockpit, and have access to it from inside the aft cabins, creating a dry locker.

Or, put another way, consider the cabin trunk to just be a covered portion of the cockpit coaming, with the coaming sweeping around the forward end of the cockpit.
Because the ultimate shape and width of the cabin trunk is integrally tied to the shape of the cockpit coaming, it follows that the width of a comfortable cockpit well and seats is a substantial deciding factor in the overall shape of the entire deck plan.
Here I was attempting to create a line that would have a pleasing shape from all angles, a line that would fair smoothly and imperceptibly into the strong curve of the cabin trunk shape, and one that would artfully follow, though not parallel, the curve of the hull.

A small coaming will extend all the way around the cockpit, just 3/4" high (which is the size of the end of this coaming.) Once I was satisfied with the coaming on the starboard side, it was time to duplicate it for the port side.
The coamings were then disassembled and the first layer was glued to the deck using stainless screws and epoxy thickened with maple wood flour.

While the coamings were held in place with two boards/jacks I drilled through the coamings and fiberglass for 6mm (1/4-inch) flat head SS bolts.
Also - the original EC winch was held in place with five screws through the coamings into the side of the winch block and there is also a large bronze bolt that runs right down through the winch, base and deck with a 3/4 backing block under the deck.

I'm sure I can fix this up (possibly by reinforcing the coaming and bolting the brackets to it), but I'm new to Beetle cats (there are none around where I sail--Bay Head, NJ) and am curious whether this is the accepted way of securing the crutch.

Coaming Winches   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Putting the sheet winches back on the coamings requires a little sheet routing effort but is not too difficult.
To make the necessary sheet angle adjustment to a coaming winch, a block needs to be added at the base of the cockpit stanchion and either a block or rub rail to turn down to this block.
The swivel cams in the picture above had replaced the regular cams near the companionway but no longer used for the jib sheets after the coaming winches were installed, they were moved outboard near the stanchion base and are now used to cleat the "twings" which adjust the jib sheet angle.

The simplest form of apron, and one especially adapted to the pointed coaming, is a cover of cloth, cut to the shape of the coaming and turned down on the edges, to button over screw heads in the latter, near the deck.
An extra wire (k) is attached to the framework, forming a coaming on the after end of the apron, and a wooden coaming also runs across the after hatch.
