Coamo is the third oldest municipality in Puerto Rico, founded in 1579.
Coamo is an agricultural center raising mangoes, coffee, avocados, bananas, poultry and cattle.
Coamo doesn't have a large sports activity program each year: the city's BSN team, the Coamo Marathon Runners, is the only professional team to play there, and they have played in Coamo with mixed success since joining the league in 1985.

He must forget that the taking of Coamo has always been credited to Major-General James H. Wilson, who on that occasion commanded Captain Anderson's Battery, the Sixteenth Pennsylvania, Troop C of Brooklyn, and under General Ernst, the Second and Third Wisconsin Volunteers.
The Second Wisconsin approached Coamo along the main road from Ponce, the Third Wisconsin through fields of grass to the right of the road, until the two regiments met at the ford by which the Banos road crosses the Coamo River.
