 Henri Coanda
In 1910 he designed, build and piloted the first jet engine propelled aircraft (simply called the Coanda-1910).
Born in Bucharest, Coanda initially embarked on a military career on the Bucharest Military School[?] where he graduated as an artillery officer, but he was more interested in the technical problems of the flight, he built a missile-airplane for the Romanian Army[?] in Bucharest.
Henri Marie Coanda (June 7, 1886 - November 25, 1972) was a Romanian inventor, aerodynamics pioneer and the parent of the modern jet aircraft.

 Coanda effect: Encyclopedia topic
The principle was named by Albert Metral after Romanian inventor Henri Coanda (Henri Coanda: more facts about this subject), who became interested in the phenomenon after it destroyed a prototype aircraft he had developed (the Coanda-1910 (Coanda-1910: the coanda-1910 was an aircraft built by romanian inventor henri coanda and exhibited...
The Coanda effect is the tendency of a stream of fluid (fluid: A continuous amorphous substance that tends to flow and to conform to the outline of its container: a liquid or a gas) to stay attached to a convex surface, rather than follow a straight line in its original direction.
The Coanda effect is important in the understanding of an airfoil's lift (lift: One of the layers forming the heel of a shoe or boot).

Coandă-1910 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unfortunately during a ground test of the engine on December 16, 1910, Coandă was caught unaware by the power of the engine and found himself briefly airborne.
It was constructed by Romanian inventor Henri Coandă and exhibited by him at the Second International Aeronautical Exhibition in Paris around October 1910.
The aircraft was quite unconventional in design, and its most striking feature was its powerplant, since it featured a kind of thermojet, a hybrid of jet engines and piston engine technology.

 Pioneer Era Planes
The 1910 Coanda was presented for the first and the last time at the Second International Aeronautic Exhibition in Paris (October 1910).
Coanda himself as the pilot (he hadn't flown a plane to that date).
Being preoccupied by the flames generated by the engine around the fuselage (later he discovered the famous "Coanda effect" based on these observations) he didn't notice that the plane took off and he got scared.

In 1910, using the workshop of Joachim Caproni, he designed, built and piloted the first 'thermojet' powered aircraft, known as the Coanda-1910Coandă-1910, which he demonstrated publicly at the second International Aeronautic Salon in Paris.
After the crash of the "Coandă 1910" airplane, Coandă observed that flames and incandescent gas emitted by the fire tended to remain close to the fuselage.

Nexus - How Come?: Coanda Effect
Very simply, the COANDA (or 'wall attachment') EFFECT is the tendency for a moving fluid (either liquid or gas) to attach itself to a surface and flow along it.
The COANDA EFFECT was discovered in the early 1900's by a Romanian aircraft engineer by the name of Henri Coanda.
This was the first and last attempt Coanda made at developing a jet aircraft (which was finally developed some 30 years later by Heinkle, Campini, and Whittle ¾ who are considered the 'fathers' of jet flight).

 Thermojet
The first application of the thermojet principle was by Henri Coanda in his Coanda-1910 aeroplane (1910).
Thermojet research was abandoned at the end of World War II as the turbojet was demonstrably a far more practical solution to jet power.
It was next explored by Secondo Campini in the early 1930s, although it was not until 1940 that an aircraft (the Campini Caproni CC.2) would fly powered by his engine.

After the Exhibition closed on the 10th of December 1910, Henri Coanda moved his aeroplane to Issy-Les-Moulineaux, were he intended to test the engine, the results of which are best told by Henri Coanda himself.
Henri Coanda should be known in history as the Farther of the Jet Engine his design (which he made himself) was thirty years before Whittle, yet all the world believes Frank Whittle invented this form of propulsion.
The aeroplane was on display in October 1910 at the Second International Aeronautical Exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris were it caused a great deal of interest and crowds as no one had seen any thing like it before (nor would they for another thirty years!).

Coanda first discovered this effect when testing the Coanda-1910, his prototype air-reactive jet aircraft.
After the plane took off, Coanda observed that the flames exhausted from the burning chambers located on either side of the fuselage tended to remain very close to the fuselage.
The answer to Question 7 is easily explained by the Coanda Effect, discovered in the early 1900s by Henri Coanda ("Questions to embarrass know-it-all engineers" editorial, Jan. 22 issue, Motion-Control supplement).

Henri Coanda (1886-1972) has built the first jet aircraft in the world, named the Coanda-1910, in 1910.
The fall of 1910 was the beginning of the military use of aviation, on the occasion of the royal maneuvres, which put Romania on second place in use of airplane for military purpose, after France.
In 1911 Coanda took over the technical management of the Bristol aircraft factories in the United Kingdom and was the constructor of the first twin-engine aircraft in the history of aeronautics (1911).

The first aircraft to incorporate significant principles of the jet engine was the Coanda-1910 (Romania), piloted by its inventor Henri Coanda in 1910.
The engine of this aircraft, unlike the modern jet engine, used a piston engine rather than a turbine to drive its compressor.
The engines in propeller powered aircraft achieve their maximum efficiency at much lower altitudes and shorter distances.

The examples of this type of design were the Henri Coanda's Coanda-1910 aircraft, and the much later Campini Caproni CC.2, and the Japanese Tsu-11 engine intended to power Ohka kamikaze planes towards the end of World War II.
In this system (called a thermojet by Secondo Campini) the air is first compressed by a fan driven by a conventional piston engine, then it is mixed with fuel and burned for jet thrust.
None were entirely successful and the CC.2 ended up being slower than the same design with a traditional engine and propeller combination.
