Coarse Graining for Upscaling of Flow in Heterogeneous Porous Media
Coarse Graining for Upscaling of Flow in Heterogeneous Porous Media: Multiscale Modeling and Simulation: A SIAM Interdisciplinary Journal Vol.
The so-called coarse graining method is used to obtain an effective permeability tensor $K^{\text{eff}}(\lam)$ which depends on the given length scale $\lambda$.
We formulate and extend the coarse graining method in Fourier space and give explicit results for the effective permeability tensor for a correct projector $P^\pm_\lambda$ in Fourier space.

 Model Reduction
This separation between the coarse grained variables and the remaining variables that cause the fluctuations may be viewed as a manifestation of an approximate system-environment split.
For instance, within a Lagrangian framework, after coarse graining the system the desired objective is to discern the form of the new effective coarse grained Lagrangian.
In this case, the coarse graining generates a map from the couplings constants of the original Lagrangian to the coupling constants of the coarse grained Lagrangian.

An expansion of the decoherence functional in the separation between histories allows the form of the deterministic equations of motion to be derived for suitable coarse grainings of a class of non-relativ- istic systems, including ones with general non-linear interactions.
More coarse graining is needed to achieve classical predictability than naive arguments based on the uncertainty principle would suggest.
Coarse graining is needed for decoherence, and coarse graining beyond that for the inertia necessary to resist the noise that mechanisms of decoherence produce.

Upscaling for Stationary Transport in Heterogeneous Porous Media   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
We develop an upscaling by the coarse graining method which considers the local flow field being a stationary random field and which is based on filtering procedures in Fourier space.
The coarse graining method is used to obtain an upscaled dispersion tensor which depends on the given length scale of the upscaling.
The numerical coarse graining also allows us to compute the upscaled dispersion for higher variances.

Ionic diffusion through protein channels: From molecular description to continuum equations
Standard continuum formulations based on macroscopic conservation laws, such as the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations, cannot obviously be assumed valid in narrow channels.
This leads to the more general coarse graining problem: The description of the diffusive motion of interacting particles in a confined region connected to a bath by averaged continuum equations.
In this paper we propose a mathematical averaging procedure that, starting from a Langevin model of ionic motion, yields effective continuum equations and boundary conditions.

Another computational method that interests me is the coarse graning of atomistic Hamiltonian into macroscopic simulations.
We consider the small reservior, the one we simulate with microscopic Hamiltonian to be linked with larger reservoir represented with thermodynamic variables.
We carried out coarse graining of the equilibrium microscopic Hamiltonian subject to such boundary condition.
