The standard of living of the population of Coast Province is lower than the Kenyan average, and the introduction of dairying by NDDP was expected to bring both nutritional and economic benefits for dairy farming households.
Kenya could be self-sufficient in oilseeds, of which protein concentrates are a by-product after the extraction of oil for human consumption but, at present, cooking oil is derived from imported palm oil and very little oilseed is grown in the country.
Kenya should be able to meet projected demand for milk and dairy products, and the relative success of the strategies employed will provide lessons for other countries wishing to develop their own dairy sector.

 Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Management and Conservation Project
It is one of the last remnant indigenous forests in Kenya, the largest and most intact coastal forest in East Africa, and by far the largest remnant of the forests that once dominated Kenya's coastal fringe.
For example, the project supported and expanded the Kipepeo butterfly farming project, which is administered by Nature Kenya in partnership with the National Museums of Kenya, and entails rearing selected butterflies and exporting their pupae to earn cash for the community.
The continuing survival of the forest and its fauna during an era of forest loss in most of the country, and region, is the clearest sign of the project's success.

Taita Hills forests are found in the middle of the Tsavo plains of Taita-Taveta District in Coast Province Kenya.
While the same hills have a mixture of exotic plantations established by the government and indigenous natural forest; the traces of original forest contain species that have been geographically and ecologically isolated for significant periods of time.

This is the third year that rainfall, during both the long and short rainy seasons, has failed in Kenya’s Coast province.
Jefwa says the government should be providing larger rations for each family, but Kamau Maina, Kilifi’s district officer, points out that “Bandari location still receives the highest portion of the relief food allocated”, compared to other divisions of the Coast province.
