Comoros -   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Union of the Comoros /kʰəˈmɔɹəz/ (French Union des Comores /ynˈjɔ̃.də.koˈmɔʀ/, Arabic اتحاد القمر /itːˈħæːd ælˈqɑmɑr/, until 2002 the Islamic Federal Republic of the Comoros) is a country in the Indian Ocean, situated at the northern end of the Mozambique Channel between northern Madagascar and northern Mozambique.
Over the centuries, the islands of Comoros were invaded by a succession of diverse groups from the coast of Africa, the Persian Gulf, Indonesia, and Madagascar.
Comoros is formed by three of the four main islands in the Comoros Archipelago; the fourth is the French territory of Mayotte.

Flag of the Comoros -   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The current flag of Comoros was adopted in 2003.
In addition, four stripes were added to symbolize the four islands of the nation: yellow is for Mohéli, white for Mayotte (claimed by Comoros but administered by France), red for Anjouan, and blue for Grand Comore.
The four stars next to the crescent also stand for the islands, while the crescent stands for Islam, which is the major religion on Comoros.

Frequently Asked Questions - Part 2
Mexico settled the confusion once and for all just before the 1968 Olympic Games by redesigning its coat of arms, placing it in the center of the green-white-red tricolor, and authorizing it as the one flag to be used for all purposes.
Many countries with flags charged with a coat of arms use that version as a state flag, but remove the coat of arms to make an easier to reproduce civil flag for their citizens.
Colours or Landesfarben, in their simplicity, can be counterposed to the complexity of coats of arms and it is not surprising that, after the French Revolution, the growth of national identities brought the recognition of colours as national symbols (so representing people instead of the sovereign).

Khilafah.com - Russia: Muslims Upset By State Symbols   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Moscow, 7 December 2005 (RFE/RL) -- The debate surrounding the coat of arms first emerged in the predominantly Muslim republic of Tatarstan, when a group of Muslims complained about having to carry passports emblazoned with Christian symbols.
The current coat of arms, which was adopted in November 1993, represents a double-headed eagle with three cross-tipped crowns.
Ashirov went on to tell RFE/RL that the coat of arms is only one example of a wider tendency to introduce Russian Orthodox symbols and practices into institutions that are, by law, secular.

 Comoros flag in 1963-1975
The flag was designed by the heraldist Suzanne Gauthier (who also designed the coat of arms of the TAAF), and had proportion 5:7.
According to an article in The Flag Bulletin [tfb] 174, from 1963 until 1975 the flag was green with a white crescent in the top hoist, facing the fly.
I think this flag was used when the Comoros were French autonomous region and also during 1975 (between self-proclaimed independence and UN-recognition).

 French Colonial Empire - Introduction
From its beginnings in the early 1600s through the great expansion of the late 19th century, the French overseas empire was formed more by the agencies and stimulation of the state, church, and armed forces than by the initiation of the business community.
Merchants, financiers, and manufacturers did engage in and profit from French imperial ventures, but generally they had to be prodded into participation by monarchical or republican officials.
France's vast African empire also included French Equatorial Africa, French West Africa, French Somaliland (now Djibouti), and the islands of Madagascar and the Comoros.
