XTC: Coat Of Many Cupboards   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Coat focuses on the better b sides demos (Terrorism, Find The Fox, Let's Build A Den) along with previously unissued demos (Dear God) and alternate takes/unreleased tunes from a variety of their albums.
Coat could probably have been reduced to a succinct two disc set and not suffered.
Despite its limitations and drawbacks, Coat manages to be the boxed set that Virgin should have released a decade ago; it features some of the finest b- sides the band released and a handful of tasteful also rans that didn't make the original albums.

Coat of Many Cupboards finishes the job that the 1990 collection Rag 'N' Bone Buffet started, unearthing a deluge of outtakes, demos, home recordings, acoustic versions, and rare live tracks from XTC's long, adventurous existence.
"Coat of Many Cupboards" is a somewhat frustrating collection-- on the one hand, the collection, largely consisting of unreleased tracks presented in a four CD boxed set, is full of gems that are bound to bring a smile to the face of the diehard fan.
Coat of Many Cupboards is essentially a closet-cleaning exercise; a 4-disc set comprised mostly of live, rare, and unreleased tracks, scattered (seemingly at random) with a handful of album tracks.

You see, Virgin Records is, in many ways, responsible for the general public's ignorance of what is arguably one of the greatest pop bands of the late twentieth century.
A Coat of Many Cupboards could be labeled a book set rather than a box set, as it's presented in hardback book form rather than a true box.
Many of the songs on the first two discs are notable as live or outtake versions of the original album cuts.

Coat Of Many Cupboards is a 4 CD box consisting of partly rehearsal or demo versions, live versions, studio outtakes and album or single versions from their huge back catalogue.
The band seems to have become friends with Virgin Records (money talks, I guess), and the 60 songs to be found here are from the period with their old record label (1977-92).
Most of us who have all their regular records are a bit put off by the fact that there are too many of these versions included.

The many sides of XTC musically are in evidence here: catchy up-tempo 2-minute wonders like ‘This is Pop’ and ‘Science Friction’ from their early period show just how energetic the playing and the singing could be…but always maintaining a strong hold on tunefulness and word play.
One convention which XTC has recently cottoned on to is the issuing of demos and early versions (they have released two demo versions of their most recent albums), and Coat of Many Cupboards contains a fair few.
It was interesting to see that the BBC last night put out a 30 minutes tribute to Spike on BBC: great, but why didn't it show any of his ground breaking Q series in the last twenty years and effectively ignored the contribution of Spike, until he was dead.

BBC - Classic Rock/Pop Review - XTC, Coat Of Many Cupboards
Coat Of Many Cupboards contains an alternative view of XTC; tracing their trajectory from jerky sci-fi new wave popsters to Brian Wilson-worshipping psychedelic troubadours.
These days, reduced to a duo with their own label, XTC may feel that history has cheated them, but along with last year's sparklingly re-mastered back catalogue, Coat could finally see the Swindonians becoming more than just kings for a day.

Fufkin.com: Mike Bennett Reviews: Part II: May, 2002
Clinic mixes in cool garage/psych tunesmithing with Madchesterish dance beats, coating them with all sorts of arty whimsy, with vocals emerging from the frothy miasma with a ghostly mystery that suggests a gene splicing of Mark E. Smith and Thom Yorke.
Clinic casts a spell that binds, bounces and intoxicates in equal amounts, with the periodic spine tingle thrown in – but a spine tingle of the EC Comics variety – the murkiness comes with a wink and a nod, none of that Pornography-era Cure primal-whine crap.
This is the rare album to have enough cred for the college kiddies but many veteran pop fans will appreciate a lot of the goings on here.

No genre was beyond them, from the rapid-fire punkishness of late-1970s material such as Traffic Light Rock or Radios in Motion to subsequent adventures in brainy experimentalism, psychedelic pastiche or their own species of Olde English folk-rock.
