Coatbridge & Airdrie was based on two towns of fairly equal size, with a historic preponderance of Catholics in Coatbridge and Protestants in Airdrie.
The rivalry exploded as the Monklandsgate scandal in the 1990s and was the main topic of the Monklands East by-election in 1994 with councillors from Airdrie alleging that power was hogged by Coatbridge-based Labour politicians.
In 1983, Coatbridge and Airdrie were split up with Coatbridge going to the new Monklands West seat along with Chryston and Milton to the north to form a seat whose shape could probably be most accurately described as a squiggle.
