Her grandfather, Alexander S. Heaton, was born in Kentucky in 1806, and was descended from a family that came from England to Virginia in early colonial times.
In 1883 he brought his family to Kansas and was one of the earliest settlers in Pratt County.

Funeral services were held September 15 at the Bonners Ferry Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for James William Coats, 63, Bonners Ferry, who died September 8 of injuries sustained in a vehicle collision near Naples.
James was born November 29, 1940, to Drew and Lenora Coats on the Coats Ranch in the state line area in Montana.
In 1980, the family moved to the James W. Coats Ranch at Stateline, where he farmed and raised cattle, logged and did private contracting for the Forest Service, both in Bonners Ferry and in Montana.

John Alexander was born in 1847, came to Kansas May 28, 1880, applied and made his deposit for a Homestead of 160 acres in Grant Township, Pratt County, two and one-half miles south of Coats, Kansas.
His wife, Jane Channel Alexander, born 1860, and their small son, Andrew Jackson, born in Macon, Missouri, Jan. 31, 1881, arrived at the homestead by wagon and mules, bringing their cattle and household goods, in approximately 1885.
After graduating from Coats High School, she and Ray Luther of Coats, were married.

James William Coats died Sept 8, 2004 at Naples, ID, from injuries sustained in a car accident along with his beloved dog Queenie.
He was born Nov. 29, 1940 to Drew and Lenora Coats at Rural Montana (Stateline area at the Coats Ranch).
In 1980, the family moved to the James W Coats ranch at Stateline where he farmed raised cattle, logged, did private contracting for the forest service both in Bonners Ferry, ID and Montana.
