If you build your own when you attach the coax to the ends of the wires, insure that you solder and wrap the connections.
Only the longest wire is attached to the end insulators and all wires are fed to the center insulator to attach to the coax feed line.
All you have to do is feed the coax to your radio and listen to the stations come in.

Coax Loss Calculations - Microwave Encyclopedia - Microwaves101.com
Update September 2006: we've added a new page that gives a more exact calculation of coax metal loss, which is needed in the case that the skin depth is NOT small compared to to the coax cross section dimensions.
Note: this analysis assumes that the skin depth is much smaller than the diameter of the coax center conductor or the thickness of its outer conductor.
New for October 2006: the formulas for coax loss due to loss tangent are derived on this separate page.

 Types of Coax
The loss is calculated based on a 100 foot piece of coax and then the type of dielectric, the size of the conductor and other variables.
The best coax you could purchase that would have virtually no loss would be one where the center conductor is suspended in air with the shield not touching the conductor.
I use a coax that is similar to Belden 9913 but is a stranded core that makes it easier to manipulate and will not crack as easily when it gets cold.

 COAX
Coax is used for conducting radio-frequency signals from one point to another.
Hold it next to the end of the coax and very gently take a sharp knife and peel off enough of the outer insulating layer to more than exual the length of the plug.
Coax can be buried underground, but that will shorten its life, nobody knows for sure how much.

The Ultimate Guide to 11 Meter CB Antennas
Loss is RF energy that the coax turns into heat or "leaks" instead of passing on to the antenna (or to the receiver from the antenna).
Say we want to make a coax that is exactly 1/2 wavelength long (this means when the wave travels through the coax, it makes exactly 1/2 of a cycle while it travels from one end of the coax to the other).
If moving the coax around the vehicle results in SWR change, this is a good indicator you have common mode currents flowing back down the coax line.

 The Defpom coax length page
The coax cable is a means for transferring your RF signal to the radiating portion of the radio system.
Use 49 feet of coax from the antenna to your meter, and 6 feet from your meter to your radio.
Where your main coax line from the antenna ends inside your home, cut off 6 feet of the coax, and put antenna connectors on each side that was cut, and add your new equipment at that point.

 Coax
The Coax Plant (genus Heliaxius Vulgaris) is thought to be a distant relative of the Spaghetti Plant, first grown in this country in the London hothouses of Kew Gardens in about 1892, after being brought back from the wilds of Peru by the intrepid explorer and botanist Sir Hubert Andrews, RGS.
Coax plants live for very long times, up to 70 odd years and in that time can produce up to 50km of top quality cable.
Quite how the long strands of coax had been found to be useful for RF is not clear, though it is rumoured that early radio listeners, perhaps tired of plant growing and fascinated with the new hobby of radio, were using dried pieces in the 1920's.

Ham Radio Coaxial Cable Power Handling and Loss Specifications
It is of importance when making decisions about getting the right coax for your Ham Station to understand that there are trade-offs that have to be considered between transmitter power, antenna gain, coax loss, and your total Ham Station system performance.
Your present coax is 100 feet long and has a loss of 3db per 100 feet.
A difference of 3 db or less between two antennas, two types of coax, or two station configurations is usually not sufficient to justify the higher costs of the more expensive, lower loss, coaxial cable unless you are a perfectionist with lots of money.

 Let's Talk Coax!
All too often the coax is ignored and performance suffers because of the lack of attention it receives.
Having a hi-performance antenna and a defective piece of coax is the equivalent of having a hi-pressure nozzel at the end of a garden hose that is full of holes.
Other ways to wreck your coax: Wear holes through it, slam it in the door a few dozen times, attempt to splice it as you would a wire going to your taillight, tie it in knots or make real sharp bends in it.

If they had, they would have made sure that the energy delivery line (coax) from the radio to the antenna was as perfect as the fuel line from the pump to the injector.
Insofar as coax is concerned, to sacrifice any quality for the sake of cost is a very poor decision.
The additional cost the manufacturer would need to add to the price of the truck for good coax and connectors would be far less than what it is going to cost you to re-do it.

 Remote Coax Switch
Multiplexing several antennas to 2 transceivers can be done with manual A/B and 1 of N switches, but the downside of that is the quantity and cost of switches required (and inherent space they occupy), and the mess and expense of all the coax cables that would have to be run to the shack.
It also saved the amount of coax that was required, which is the primary reason one would want to use a remote coax switch.
It might seem like a lot of trouble to go through all of this work just for a remote coax switch but if you have a need for such a thing, options to purchase one are limited.

This was seen in the larger effect of COAX at high UV light levels where the control was 78% with COAX (35% without COAX) compared to the low UV light levels were the control was 73% with COAX (57% without COAX).
