  Cobaltite - LoveToKnow 1911
COBALTITE, a mineral with the composition CoAsS, cobalt sulpharsenide.
It is found as granular to compact masses, and frequently as beautifully developed crystals, which have the same symmetry as the isomorphous mineral pyrites, being cubic with parallel hemihedrism.
Crystals have also been found at Khetri in Rajputana, and under the name selata the mineral is used by Indian jewellers for producing a blue enamel on gold and silver ornaments.

 COBALTITE (Cobalt Iron Arsenic Sulfide)
Cobaltite although rare is still an important and valuable ore of cobalt, a strategically and industrially useful metal.
The symmetry of cobaltite is somewhat in dispute.
If cobaltite is actually orthorhombic than these forms are either pseudocubes etc or they are pseudomorphs from a truly isometric phase which existed at higher temperature and/or pressure.

cobaltite, opaque, silver-white, sometimes reddish or grayish mineral of the pyrite group, a compound of cobalt, arsenic, and sulfur, CoAsS.
It occurs in crystals of the cubic system, also in compact to granular masses.
It is an important ore of cobalt, found chiefly in Sweden, Norway, India, and Azerbaijan.

 cobalt
Cobalt occurs in the mineral cobaltite, smaltite, and erythrite, and is often associated with nickel, silver, lead, copper, and iron ores, from which it is most frequently obtained as a by-product.
Some of the commercially mined ores are carrollite, smaltite, cobaltite, siegenite, and sphaerocobaltite.
The amount of cobalt mined is relatively small in comparison with copper, nickel, and the cobalt supply depends to a large extent on the demand for the latter two metals.

Optical Properties of Cobaltite and Manganite (GMR) Materials.
In the case of the cobaltites, we observe that the substitution of La by either Sr or Ca enhances the optical conductivity, \sigma_1(ømega), throughout the infrared range of frequencies and a gap-like feature appears close to 1000 cm^-1.
Also, a sum-rule analysis of the room-temperature conductivity reveals that for the same level of divalent substitution x the carrier density at infrared frequencies is much higher for the cobaltite samples compared with the manganite samples.
