 New Georgia Encyclopedia: Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA)
The transit agency was established in 1971 with the passage of an authorizing referendum by voters in Fulton and DeKalb counties and the city of Atlanta.
Cobb Community Transit began operating in 1989 on routes within the county, located northwest of metropolitan Atlanta.
The Gwinnett County Transit system began operation in November 2001 with sixteen buses; the county ultimately expects to have twenty-two express buses, thirty-eight local buses, and fourteen vans.

Newer buses are equipped with GPS, making automatic announcements inside the bus of upcoming stops and major roads, and stop requests from passengers.
The GPS also allows the dispatch center to keep track of where every bus is. The newest buses also run on compressed natural gas (CNG) rather than gasoline or diesel.
