  New Georgia Encyclopedia: Cobb County
Cobb was one of nine northwest Georgia counties carved out of Cherokee Indian country in 1832 and today is part of the booming Atlanta metropolitan area.
In 1915 the county gained infamy for the lynching of an Atlanta Jewish businessman, Leo Frank, allegedly the murderer of thirteen-year-old Mary Phagan, formerly of Cobb County.
In the 1990s Cobb was the home base for Newt Gingrich, the first Republican Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in forty years, and Roy Barnes, Georgia's governor from 1999 to 2003.

Macworld: News: More details on Cobb County iBook deal
When generating their request for proposals (RFPs) from possible laptop computer vendors, Cobb County school officials researched the one-to-one computing efforts made in other parts of the country, including Henrico County, Va., the state of Maine and Schaumburg, Ill. Learning from some of those programs’ shortfalls was key when making their decisions, said Dillon.
Cobb County made sure to include that as part of their RFP, which Apple has agreed to — Microsoft Office will be installed on all the new iBooks.
Dillon also explained that Cobb County is separately bidding out the installation and maintenance of the wireless networking infrastructure that will be needed to allow these thousands of iBooks to surf the Internet and communicate with other network resources.

TMO Reports - Apple Beats Out Dell in $25M Georgia School iBook Deal; Office Part of Package || The Mac Observer
Apple Computer beat out Dell, IBM and HP to win a US$25 million contract with the Cobb County, Ga. School District that will provide some 63,000 G4 iBooks to every student and teacher in the district within four years, the school system and Apple confirmed Monday.
After training, the goal is to deploy the remaining 46,000 laptops to middle school students at other locations.
I do have to admit that the news about the change of heart at the VA county that announced last week the 'switch' to Dell after having had the pilot program with Apple for (what?) 2 years had left me with some worries/questions.
