Topic: Cobles

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

Coble - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This style of boat is traditionally used on the North East coast of England, from southern-most examples found around Hull, to Berwick-upon-Tweed on the Scottish border.
Cobles were clinker-built locally, where needed, without the use of plans.
Today, surviving cobles are generally powered by diesel engines, removing the need for the distinctively shaped 'lug' sail.

The coble is constructed with a flat bottom so that it can be beached for safety on these flat, open beaches, but it also has a high bow (the forward part of the ship) which allows it to cope with the deep and dangerous seas of the North East coast.
A coble was launched from the beach by pushing it, bow first into the surf and rowing it into quieter waters before stepping (raising) the mast, setting the rudder and raising the sail.
Although the larger cobles and mules were used to fish for herring, during the late 19th century, larger keelboats were used which travelled further in search of their catch.

The cobles were painted a variety of colours, the usual combinations being blue and white, blue and green or pink, and fl and white.
The coble would then be towed stern-first and the deep bow acted as a fixed rudder and prevented the coble yawing behind the towing vessel.
Towing a coble bow-first, when the rudder is damaged or missing, is an invitation for trouble, since the fore-foot then acts as a rudder and will flip the coble over quite quickly.

Cobles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The coble's main features are those of a deep forefoot and a flat bottom towards the stern.
These characteristics enable the coble to be launched off broad beaches of low gradient into breaking seas, and to be retrieved still facing the breakers, i.e.
In modern times cobles have adapted particularly well to motorisation and, although few are built these days, there are still some fishing for the declining fish stocks.

The loss of life from fishing fishing cobles on the North East coast was tremendous and most of the fishing communities had suffered the loss of some or all of their male family members.
However, after the cobles left the bay that morning storm clouds appeared on the horizon and the strong signs of very bad weather in the near future were observed by many on both land and sea.
The cobles at sea hoisted their short sails (which were used for bad weather) and started to make their way back to the shore.

The lack of single keel (the double keels of the coble are called drafts or skorvels and are "like two deep sledge runners which point for and aft" p.10), the lack of horizontal ribs and the need for thwarts (or tofts) to brace the structure are also indicative.
Although the first possible description of a coble does not appear until the 16th century, this does not mean that the coble form was not developed earlier than that: evidence on all types of medieval shipping is extremely scarce.
In terms of construction and name, the coble could indeed be a descendant of one of the earliest forms of boat in the British Isles, preserved and developed because of its usefulness in local conditions.
