Jack Sparks - The Other Side of Country - June 09, 2004 Archives
Kind of an awkward little song, performed awkwardly, by a bunch of guys who were very realistically facing the awkward situation of being rock stars and dealing with one woman for the rest of their lives.
I've got about ten moments in my day-to-day life that cause my euphoria meter to go off the charts; one of those is when I'm tooling down the highway in my pickup truck, with the windows down, outside the city somewhere, and some REAL country station puts this song on the airwaves.
Examine this song in the light of where it was recorded and when, and forget for a moment, all the tunes that came after it.

Sure, once in a while the indies showed their appreciation by sending some cocaine or hookers to station employees, but the colorful crew of fix-it men were basically providing a service: forging relationships with the gatekeepers in the complex world of radio, and turning that service into a deceptively simple and lucrative business.
The indies are the shadowy middlemen record companies will pay hundreds of millions of dollars to this year to get songs played on the radio.
There are 10,000 commercial radio stations in the United States; record companies rely on approximately 1,000 of the largest to create hits and sell records.

The song also shows that great guitar work is still present in Low, but spiced up to a spacey attire.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Diamond Dogs [ECD] [Remaster] - David Bowie at Epinions.com
The next song on the record is a song that is probably one of the greatest tunes Bowie had ever and also one of the most beloved in his catalog, the song is “Rebel Rebel”.
Sessions for “Diamond Dogs” were pretty tough and Bowie had grown into a bad cocaine addiction that would affect his work for the next few years.
After the first eight songs of the album, the flow of the album starts to lose its momentum when it reaches the “1984” conceptual tracks of “1984”, “Big Brother”, and “Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family” and that really the only big flaw on this record besides the disappearance of Mick Ronson’s guitar performance.

All these periodic payola inquiries would lead you to believe that the only way to get a song played on the radio is by delivering duffel bags full of cash, cocaine and Adidas sneakers to a station's doorstep.
